amd 7970 or gtx 680 ?
I think the 680 performs better, they are similar price.

EDIT: the 680 uses less power and my antec 550watt psu meets the requirement.

Is the 680 supported well will games old and new?
Is it noisy?

They are just about the same. So buy whichever one has a better deal.

my evga gtx 680 4gb card is the best card i ever owned...might be everything else in my sytem helps make it fast but any game i throw at it,it plays on ultra settings maxed out...example batman arkum city...play flawless max settings on everything at 1920 x 1080p i mean anygame...ive always been a nvidia fan cause most pc games always pop the screen nvidia the way the game is meant to be played...right...not to many flash ati radeon screen...plus nvidia cards have the ageia chip for physics built right into the chip where as ati you need another card for that...nvidia all the way and the evga 680 superclocked 4gb ftw card kicks ass

What I'm finding hard to fathom is the power supply, my current PSU supplies 20amps on the 12v rails, I don't think thats enough for either card, even though its a 550 watt unit and meets the requirement as said in amd/nvidia sites.

Pretty much leaning to nvidia atm, I just need to do more digging on the real power consumption, if I get it wrong the psu will cut out under load.
Noizzzmaker 30. des. 2012 kl. 5.43
if you can afford a 680 you can afford a new 750watt psu aswell :PP
Tox Laximus (Utestengt) 30. des. 2012 kl. 7.01
No need to get a new psu, mine has 4 rails and each can output 12v 20amps (240watts) but the overall power output can no exceed 540 watts, the amd 7970 needs 150watts on a 8 pin rail and 75watts on a 6 pin rail, the gtx 680 needs 195 watts on 2 6 pin rails, my psu is ok and there wont be any dual cards, luckily my dads a electrician which saved me £80.

I googled "gtx 680 problems" - 3,180,000 results.
I googled "amd 7970 problems" - 2,370,000 results.

gtx 680 - £388.47
amd 7970 - 353.83

I think the gtx has the edge on speed but amd has the edge on compatibility.

Still edging towards the gtx atm, but its gonna take a few months to save up anyway.

Does anyone else panic when getting new kit? its like I'm getting married or something, lolz.

The problems result could be skewed based on ownership :)

"Just got a gtx 680" About 23,100,000 results
"Just got an amd 7970" About 11,900,000 results

So keep that in mind!

I too always panic, I ended up with the 680, but that's because I'm a long time 3dFX fan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3dfx) starting with my first two Voodoo's! :) My panic is always over the other junk though... do you spend that extra money for that better processor that only delivers minimal FPS improvements!? Should you get an SSD!? OMG Why is this mother board $150 more than that one!?! :)

Good luck!

yeah had an ati at first...colors were distorted...got rid of it...picked up my first 3dfx voodoo 5 card and was hooked ever since....almost 10 yrs ago...damn time flies when your having fun
gtx - it seems to me more reliably
I say GTX 680 i run one myself, awesome card but Crysis 2, Metro 2033 and Far Cry 3 at 1080p fully maxed can make it sweat..

The 7970 Ghz edition is cheaper than the 680 and outperforms it. You also get 3 free games if you purchase on Newegg.

In reality though, both of them are great cards. Nvidia has some extra features such as adaptive vsync and physx, but AMD's cards are by far the best bang for buck. Can't really go wrong with either of them.

Its like choosing between Margaret Thatcher[en.wikipedia.org] and Mary Whitehouse[en.wikipedia.org], both are pure evil and run everything into the ground.

Edit: USA guys wont get that, Thatcher killed the UK and Whitehouse killed UK TV with censorship, pure evil and run everything into the ground just means they both kick ass.

The AMD: Radeon HD 7970 is fully DirectX 11.1
The Nvidia: GTX 680 is only DirectX 11, as it clearly states on the box in which it comes.
Here is proof: http://blogs.amd.com/play/2012/12/14/gcn-architecture-full-dx111/
Windows 8 is DirectX 11.1

Do you mean better vsync and less micro stutters by 2D stability?

From what I've been digging up on google the nvidia seems to have better performance in games even though its technically less powerful.

My computer has run fine with both AMD & Nvidia video cards.
I always use the latest official drivers.
I never use pirated software or games.

I here the 7950 and 7970 have stuttering problems in game though thats what made me go with the GTX680, but in saying that my friend has a 7950 and it seem's ok and like said above it came with 3 games worth £90 at the time on Steam so take that from the £220 price tag and that's £130 for the card which is pretty good really.
