help installing my new graphics card and psu, plz
I own a premade Dell XPS 8300 and am installing a Sapphire HD 7970 and a Seasonic X-series 650. My first attempt resulted in my computer not starting. I think the problem maybe that I am a bit confused with the PSU and even though I plugged into everything my old PSU was plugged into I am doing somthing wrong.
My old power supply has built in cables. The four things it plugs into is my hard drive my blueray drive and my mobo twice (one big slot and one four pin slot which says secondary power). When installing my new PSU and GPU I used the detatchable cords and plugged them into each of the four slots that were being powered previously, plus my GPU. The computer would not start. I unplugged the secondary power then tried to start and got a light come on the mobo and a high pitch electronic freaquency but that was about it. I reinstalled my old card and PSU and the computer runs fine. What am I doing wrong?
Please bare with me, I have no idea what I am doing. If you need any more info about my setup please just say so and I will help you in anyway possible.

try swapping just the power supply and see if it runs normally

Well firstly you need to make sure the new PSU's cables you are putting into the motherboard are going into the right places. Make sure the 24pin connector is plugged into the motherboard, its usually located on the far right side of the motherboard. Next plug the 4pin or 8pin 12v CPU cable into the connector, usually placed to the left of where the CPU is located and be sure its actually the 4pin or 8pin for the CPU that you are putting in there and not one of the PCI-E ones.

If both of those are plugged in it should power on, if not then it could be the PSU or you messed something up.

make sure the PSU is actually turned on, should be a lil button to flip on the PSU.

Also i dont believe u hearing any high pitched noise is a good thing, though it could have just been the PSU's fan powering up but dunno, if you got the PSU from a store take it back and get a replacement as it may be faulty, unlikely but u never know.

Nothing from the power supply.
I thought it may have been because the only four prong cord (for the secondary power) plugs into the cpu/ pci-e part of the psu but according to CJ this IS for the cpu so its not that.
Yes CJ the motherboard cable is plugged into the M/B part of my PSU into the connector at the far right of my mobo and the four pin cable is plugged into the cpu/ psi-e part of my PSU and into the connector above and to the left of the cpu. And of course the power switch was on :P

Well could just be a faulty PSU then.

Could try it on a diffy PC if ur able to..

For the CPU connector on the motherboard, is it 4pin or 8pin?

Also, it appears that PSU comes with a 4pin ATX12V connector(which is what plugs into the motherboard) and 2 8pin EPS12v connectors if ur MB supported an 8pin which it doesnt, those 8pins are NOT PCI-E connectors so be sure you dont have those plugged into the graphics card.

already tried it without the graphics card.

Alright just making sure u didnt end up using 1 of those on the GPU.

Well all in all it sounds like the PSU is faulty as your previous PSU still works with the system.
So all you can do now is get a replacement and see if it actually works.

There are two plugs for the mobo cable that plug into the PSU. I thought I tried both but that mustve been after I unplugged the four pin cpu cable.

EDIT: that is i only had one plugged in before.

the atx 12v is often 2x 4 pin plugs, make sure that goes to the motherboard near the cpu

and the pci-e plugs are often 6pin + 2pin plugs, make sure that goes to the gpu

it is possible to plug them in the wrong places, but it will damage things, since the 12v and grounds are reversed for the plugs
