Would like advice on a PSU for upgrade

My system specs:
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz
Mobo - ASUS IPIBL-LB (Benicia)
RAM - 4Gig DDR2 RAM
GPU - Nvidia 9800GT 1GB
PSU - 300w

I have 2 SATA HDD's and a single DVDRW+ drive only on top of this.

Recently my system has been playing up and I've tracked the problem down to my PSU. Being a fairly cheap no name thing I got from a friend that's not too surprising, but not wanting to waste chance for an upgrade I decided to swap out my tired 9800GT for an MSI 650Ti PE while I was at it.

What I'd like some advice on is how large a PSU should I really need to run this system with the new card effectively for gaming? The card is reportedly pretty efficient, but I've heard differing opinions on what it needs all over the place.

i have no problems with thermaltake cases and coolers

for power supplies i dont even read customer reviews on sites that sell items
hardwaresecrets or johnnyguru do load testing on their units


and a psu is one of the most important things in your case, if it goes up in smoke it often does not go alone
can take the mobo, hdd, gpu, cpu and other parts with it
its the one component not to skimp out on

Why are you post a oldest PSU? It is not ever in store anymore as I check it out on newegg and amazon. Hardwaresecrets or johnnyguru review site is where only one person is write review. It is important to read review site and customer review (unless the review is useful). Good thing is I don't own first PurePower series. I have Thermaltake PurePower RX, no problem.

If you`re keeping a standard setup, like better middle class cpu and gpu (single) and doing only little or no OC, a 400W quality PSU is already enough. For the same setup with OC you can pick a 500W to be on the safe side long term (capacitors aging). A 650W is good for small SLI/CF, but IMHO a crapconnection isn`t worth the money. I suggest ~500W, slight OC, no SLI/CF and much rather change the GPU "in cycles" ;-) or get second hand.

Personally, I`ve made good experiences with Enermax (they ain`t got a low quality section). Seasonic is also most common for quality, next best choice is IMHO Antec, especially in the low budget section. Coolermaster, Thermaltake and Corsair PSUs differ in quality depending on the series/price, but I didn`t take a closer look, yet I got my top 3.
