Graphics Card Choices (Can't decide)
I've been looking to buy the 7870. Through my searches I have found these 3;

VTX3D Black Edition Radeon HD 7870 (Tahiti LE) OC 2GB GDDR5

PowerColor PCS+ Myst. Edition Radeon HD 7870 (Tahiti LE)

XFX HD 7870 DD Edition 2GB GDDR5

I can't decide which one would be the better option. Prices ranges isn't an issue, £200 I have to spend on a new graphics card.

Any other cards that are better than all 3 within the same price range? Then let me know also!

Thanks

I've had XFX cards and a VTX card in the past, and the only reason I ever stopped using them was because I purchased a better card. From personal experiences, they're both reliable cards that won't break down on you.

What about a Gigabyte GTX 660 TI OC?

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_660_ti_windforce_oc_review,14.html

Seems to flog the 7870 in this review. Only about $300 AUD/USD

That's a very old review. With newer drivers 7870 and 660 Ti are around the same performance.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/1.html

I had a look at your link and the 660ti is still outperforming the 7870 by 10% overall at 1080 x 1200 even with AMD's new drivers.

They're also using very old Nvidia drivers. The latest Nvidia drivers also improve performance significantly compared to what was used in the review. More than 40% since then in some games.

So buy what you like. I was just suggesting Gigabyte's overclocked 660ti coz it's a good card at a good price.

I would prefer 650ti boost or 660ti from nvidia. They clock well and are compatible with physX and cude processing:) Good luck with your choice

go for a nvidia card, for physX

Thanks a lot for all the good suggestions. I'm finding it hard to choose between the 7870 and the 660. Is the difference big enough between them?? I just want the best for the money I have.

The best for your money would still be trying hard on finding a 7950 instead, however as a choice between Nvidia vs AMD (so sad on the ATI name being gone). It would come down on personal preferences. Nvidia and AMD both have + and - points and a lot of fanboys from both camps always bring up old arguments... I still hear people go on about Catalyst being bad while I left Nvidia for their crappy driver interface and loved the then new Catalyst... Now here is the fun part, that was 6 years ago...

For work I manage IT and we got both type of brands, although we're talking about a gaming setup (I presume) it would be nice to know a bit more.

Assuming Windows 7, general Steam games and for the rest a decent pc.. What is your mobo (had to replace my previous one because my mobo was limiting my then new GPU 5850) aka, just to be sure... A proper 16x 2.0 lane is advised imo following the part of; what else do you do with it?

You run something that requires PhysX or toy with programs like SolidWorks? Because in those cases the choice once more gets interesting. As for just a blind "buy" based on price and performance, stay away from rebrands and go for the highest you can find (maybe a sale?).

If I do a quick search on UK based webshops: http://www.videocardshop.co.uk/default.aspx?cat=0

add 19 and you got a 7950 which usually can get OC'd close to a 7970 performance

The GTX 660 can beat a 7870 in some benchmarks and the GTX 660ti can beat a 7950 in some benchmarks. The GTX 660ti or overclocked GTX 660 beats the GTX 580 by a considerable margin.

The motherboard I will be using is; N68-VS3 FX. Yeah, it'll be for games. I just want to build a system that will last me 3 years atleast. My budget for GPU is 200, as well as 200 for CPU.

Nvidia has Adaptive V-Sync which is pretty cool. I don't know if AMD has smething similar. Standard V-Sync sucks ball and sometimes runs at 30 fps when youset it to 60 fps. Look it up.
