What's better for games. Bootcamp Windows 8 or Mac OS X (latest)?
Hi.
I have a MacBook Pro and have only recently got into online gaming, I know that Macs are not meant for gaming. I also have Windows 8 installed on it through bootcamp, so my question is what is better for games to run i.e. Garry's mod, R.U.S.E my fav games. Mac OS X or Windows 8 through bootcamp.

The Mac specs are:
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB Graphics card (built in to processor i think)
It's also a mid 2012 model if that means anything?

Thanks in advance.

Use OSX and buy games with "Steamplay". I have heard bad things about bootcamp. If you want to use Windows for gaming then you must do a proper "dual boot" installation without running Windows through OSX bootcamp.

I suggest you stick with OSX unless you need to play a PC only title.

S'Mac
seriously Macs aren't great for gamers:
1. most games run on Windows not OSX, though some are nice enough to have "Steamplay"
2. it's impossible to get the best graphics cards on a Mac unless you install them yourself
3. Macs are not very upgradeable. In fact you might say they are deliberately crippled for that.
4. Macs are very expensive and not good value per performance for a gamer.
5. Macs are mostly mobile or mobile/desktop hybrid parts in everything except the (overpriced and outdated) Mac Pro desktops and simply can not compete with desktop performance, even though they can perform "well enough" for many great things.

HD 4000 graphics is probably better than a current generation gaming console.
It's not a "gaming" computer though.

There are many great things to be said about Macs, including fashion, style, portability, slim, professional looking and more. Performance is unfortunately not one of these things.

Some people think the new Mac Pro is the bomb and it looks impressive (in pictures and specs) but I built my own PC and upgraded it over the years as I wanted to. I have a huge selection of CPU's and motherboards to choose from. What upgrade path does the Mac Pro offer?

Windows, because there is a handful of games for mac. yeah valve games are on "steamplay" and Blizzard releasses its games for both systems, but thats about it with "serious" games. Oh and minecraft.

Otherwise, play them on both systems to see for yourself, simplest thing to do.

He was asking about which OS would run games better on his particular computer, not what OS had the most selection of games.

I listed one of the advantages of windows. And read the whole post next time.

Don't have a mac, don't have problems. (You can just scratch the osx installation entirely and install windows instead, but i think your best bet would be to learn how to install linux and it's standard bootloader (grub) on mac, which you can do without using bootloader, then you can just boot up your computer, get into grub and choose between linux, mac or windows.

hey I'm a dev. When a game is done right you will always get better performance in OS X compared to windows on the same hardware, it's a much more effiefienct and proper OS.

This statement is false, for the same reason that it is false about linux even if it's the most efficient and proper OS out of the 3.

The reason for that is
1. Graphics card drivers for OS X or Linux tend to just simply not be as good as the ones on windows, reason being that Nvidia/Amd are focusing on windows moreso than OS X. they know the games are on windows, they know their drivers are needed on windows more than anywhere else.
2. Windows 8 is quite a lot more efficient than windows 7, and windows XP is more efficient than both windows 8 and OS X i can pretty much promise you (especially if you use the performance edition) in most cases windows xp will even be more efficient than linux since the window managers on linux today are consuming way more resources than they used to.
3. You can not use Net Framework, nor XNA framework on OS X. You can't use DirectX either, It's arguable whether DirectX(for windows) or OpenGL (for everything) is better, but the fact remains that today most of the best lookign games are made on DirectX and not OpenGL. (But i do agree that i wish all games were on opengl, because then it would be easy to port the games to any platform, linux, windows, mac or playstation)
4. No matter how inefficient windows may be, it should not affect the performance in games if you have a decent modern desktpo because it'll only use like 2 of your 8gb of RAM, and the game will most likely never use more than 4, if you have a dual core or better processor your OS will never be using 1 core all by itself, and most games usually don't even properly support multithreading so you only need 1 core for the game itself. And like i said before, the graphics card drivers in windows are simply better which is THE most important thing when it comes to gaming. and your OS no matter which one you're using wont be consuming a lot of your graphical memory.

The most important reason not to be gaming on a mac is that all PC games are windows compatible, few are compatible with mac and even less are compatible with linux.

But if Valve will have success in its campaign to push games over to linux, i will gladly jump ship over to Linux, in fact i prefer linux over windows, and i just hate OS X. i'm still using windows 7 because of how much of an abomination windows 8 is user interface-wise, it's even worse than apple's horrid OS X.

Macs are great but are usually more expensive so most people buy pc's which means software developers usually support whatever has the higher user base.

False again (although it is true that developers are forced to support what most users use). you're full of mistakes bro. Macs are PCs, do you know what PC stands for mr. dev? personal computer. I cannot deny that macs are great, they have good hardware. but they price it (at least in my country) at 300-500%(Not an exaggeration) of what other computer vendors sell equal or better hardware for. (therefore it is plain stupidity to buy macs and it's mostly bought by brand freaks and people who unfortunately just don't know better) I build my own PCs, the best laptops imo are the lenovo ones. thinkpad ftw. industrial computers are made to last, but they're business laptops, not gaming ones. i would argue that they have better motherboards than the apple computers. and they have a better design. (Designed to last, and designed to be durable rather than designed to be shiny)

@Riful +1. Personally i didn't want to bother with mister "Master Developer", but you nailed it.
