Changing DNS
What are the risks of changing DNS?

I'm attempting to switch my DNS because discord got banned in my area and I'm planning to access without using VPN. (VPN slows my internet 10 times no matter which VPN I choose)

And I'm asking if it's risky because I use steam all the time and idk if that would mess with my IP or location so any purchase attempt in a different location will lock my account.

It is not risky to mess up the other stuff as long as you are connecting to the best DNSs. Your IP is the same, your location is the same. Will it work? It might or might not.
But it won't hide you from your ISP, so I would check the law just in case is it legal or not to access it even if it is blocked.

You can install a VM with light distro of Linux or Windows where you run the VPN service + discord + audio, while your host machine (the one with running Steam) won't be affected by this.

none

often google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or cloudfare (1.1.1.1) are faster than isp default dns

but it does not change your region or area

dns only converts the website name to numbers, thats it

http://142.250.191.174 = https://www.google.com/

if you do want to change the dns server, do it on the router or isp given modem+router combo
then it will be changed for all devices connecting to it

There are no risks at all. I have always used Quad9. They have a number of options from advert blocking to not collecting your data and blocking malicious sites.

However, it will not solve your problem. For that, you need a VPN or Tor.

DNS does not work the way you think it works. Changing your DNS resolvers will not accomplish what you think it will accomplish.

The only thing you are doing is changing who you are asking to tell you what IP some domain is or vis-a-versa if you do a reverse lookup.

Vpns are a mask. Nothing more. OK you can change your local and sometimes filtered. But I don't need that.

Ok so I did change my DNS to the most common one which is:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Discord software didn't work but it did work on browser which is more than enough for me.
And yes I didn't need to do anything else lol

Thank you all for the help.

Best bet is change the DNS in your Gateway/Router as that is much more effective

use cloudfare (1.1.1.1) and enable dns encryption
the risk is that you get access to banned sites :lunar2019coolpig:

How is it any more effective? The only thing that would do is make so any of their devices that get their DNS resolvers set by DHCP from the gateway would use those DNS. It isn't any different or more/less effective if they set them on their devices.

Makes it easier so don't have to do it for each device; especially when it comes to game consoles or a phone/tablet

And don't just change the IPv4 DNS, also change the IPv6 DNS
