NOWTV - New router or a deco mesh setup?

asking for a mate, i wasnt 100% sure what to recommend, he asked what would i recommend when the speed isnt great throughout the house, i know the router supplied from the ISPs are rubbish and locked down so not even sure a new router is possible (replacement), im guessing the deco mesh setup is the best option, its not even a big house, so 1 node upstairs might even be sufficient, plus there plug and play arent they?

any help appreciated, sorry for being a noob but want to get the right info before i recommend him anything, thanks very much

you can always use your own router behind the isp provided modem/router combo
most combos you can even put in bridge mode, so it passes the internet ip to your dedicated router

it is a good idea to get a new router, or update its firmware every 5 years or so

the router itself may be limiting speeds, test with a pc connected directly to the modem (make sure windows network is set to public, to block any incoming attempts)
