New Youtube anti-adblock tactic- being a resource hog
https://www.pcgamer.com/its-not-just-you-youtube-is-slowing-down-your-pc-if-you-have-adblock-installed-by-making-your-cpu-sweat-likely-as-part-of-its-draconian-war-on-ad-blockers/#comment-jump

Looks like Youtube is making Chrome run slower by artificially increasing CPU usage when it detects adblock. The kicker is this affects Youtube premium members as well. Really makes me question the value of Youtube premium when they do scorched earth tactics like this.

Not my problem, I have been always using Firefox before chrome existing.

ABP is so bad and has been for ages, whitelisting companies for bribe money and generally being a total hog.

gorhill, the dev of uBlock Origin has outed the parent company of AdBlock Plus for a long time now. Here's an example I snipped from X--some don't have accts. there so I'm not gonna link it. I mean: when it comes to ads, trackers, etc, it's all or nothing, not "if it suits us, we'll block it" mentality. I have yet to see an "acceptable ad." :steamhappy:

Youtube is just greedy. They gave away their power to take everyone's money, because every substantial and decent creator, are receiving donations from people who sub to them, and these people can just give others money, maybe Youtube takes a cut of it, who knows, but they can't figure out how to monetize something that's the wrong thing.

If Youtube took 5% of all donations off of superchats, they would still make a substantial amount of money. Would it be profitable? Who knows...but it seems like the more fair option. Otherwise, people will leave. Why would I wait for a video to load on the fastest internet available....but if I go to a different site, it's totally different? I wouldn't wait. I would leave.

Moreover, I don't think Youtube has the authority to prevent their content creators, from leaking free content to people (creators might do this as an "f u" to youtube), maybe....or maybe they're greedy too.

Also, content creators also do sponsorships, so why not just take a cut there and ask the company wanting to do a short infomercial in the video for some of the money? I'll skip over it, unless it's interesting. Also, if I can't guess the product in the first eight seconds, I don't care. Or, if it's a terrible transition to a voiceover of some images. If the creator can make the promotion funny, then I am more inclined to buy that product.

Forcing ads down people's throats is ultra annoying.

Saying they are greedy because they are trying to run a business is just stupid. How about you go work a job and when its time for your paycheck I'll call you greedy and send you on your way. Just because they are a large company doesn't mean they don't have a right to make money and without money none of those services would exist. No one starts a business to break even or lose money.

Ads are there to subsidize the masses. If they were just going to exist off superchats or other donations what do you do for channels that don't bring in enough to cover the expense of having them on the platform? "Hey you have a million subs but they don't donate enough so we are going to remove you from the platform".

That being said I'm not against ad blockers and I use them. I do understand that its in these businesses best interest to find ways to eliminate them just like they know people are going to continue to look for ways to block them. Its a never ending cat and mouse game. If you don't want ads "forced down your throat" then you have options, pay for premium, block them, or don't use the service.

Ads are there to subsidize the masses. ...

Google has at least two privacy-related fines exceeding 1 billion US dollars going on. There is no DOUBT in my mind at least part of this nastiness is aimed at recouping at least some of those losses.

Why is YouTube being so sneaky about undermining its features? No one has answered this yet. To me it's not so much about the ads, it's about the tactics to get revenue out of people who were well-accustomed to this service before this nasty BS. Since YouTube is a subsidiary of trillion dollar Google, I don't see them hurting for cash, not then and not now.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But the timing seems right on the money.
YT is an immensely complicated subject. There are so many problems associated with it. It even bleeds out to ISPs and their infrastructure costs because of all the data transmission worldwide.
I even remember when YT was not profitable. But apparently that has changed over the years.
It just seems like basic corporate greed to abuse a strong position as big tech, while many issues on the platform remain. Those "contact me on instagram" bots are really annoying.
it doesn't hog that much resources
Never understood why people used chrome even without those blatant problems.
I just read on another forum the slowdown is attributed to a bug in AdBlock Plus. Case closed. :steamfacepalm:
The reason YouTube started ads long ago is so that they can keep accounts free to everyone. It is not free for owners to run YouTube servers and equipment is very expensive.

Unfortunately, they tend to accept any ads no matter what. So, my suggestion is never to click any ads.
