Generally speaking , Electronic device are always Gimmick , they put feature there to make you feel different thus make you superior, happy
I occasionally turn it on but I don’t like it. It’s not dark on my screen. It’s a combination of very dark and eye burning bright.
The extreme contrast can look fantastic in some games like in Armored Core 6 but my eyes get tired when playing at night.
Gaming can work, if you spend time tuning the in-game gamma and brightness and play with the lights off, but the slightest bit of external glare or reflection ruins it.
The difference HDR can make is insane. But it's technology so there is a learning curve like with allmost all tech related stuff.
Maybe you're just not the target audience, some people get a 1440p/60hz VA Panel and thats their end all be all. And that's fine.
For me, my 1500€ Monitor has way way worse HDR than my 1000€ TV.
It probably depends on what someone understands under a fortune but I think for around 700+ you can get pretty good HDR.
Did you buy OLED? Because on anything less it is, to say the least, unimpressive.
I have an OLED monitor and HDR is spectacular. However, not all the time.
Firstly, Windows is not HDR so shows little difference. May even be worse. You need to use Windows Calibration from Microsoft to make it a little better. You can download it from them or get it from the Windows Store.
Secondly, not all HDR content is impressive. Destiny 2, Borderlands 3, these are some games that are really spectacular in HDR. I am sure there are more that I don't have.
I once got told off for telling people to use SDR most of the time then just switch to HDR when you play the game you prefer in HDR. Apparently, modern OLED monitors are intended to be run in HDR all the time? I dunno, I am not an expert, but I use something called Auto Actions to select when to enable HDR.
I wouldn't be upset. I don't use HDR very often. It only speeds up the demise of an OLED monitor anyway.
Second, It needs calibrated. How does the game dev know your peak hdr? How do you have an on switch when it needs to know whats your peak? Some folks only have hdr400 you need to calibrate it. Most games dont even let you calibrate it.
I found Ori was breathtaking, Its just like a normal oled image but certain things can really pop thats the hdr making stuff like the sunset 1000 nits and keeping the rest just like sdr would look thats what proper hdr looks like.
Lol, you literally can toggle HDR dude, both in Windows and Linux.
And not only can you select peak brightness in both games and the OS should you want but what do you mean "how does the game dev know your peak?" and "How do you have an on switch when it needs to know whats your peak?"?
Like for one if you calibrate anything that setting doesn't magically disappear. Did you think you lose that data?
Second, the game knows the same way it knows your refresh rate, resolution, display size, and DPI, its in the EDID dude.
PLEASE I beg of you, don't try to advise people on topics you don't understand.
