Which controller to get for gaming on Linux?
Hello to everyone,

I'm a fairly new to gaming on Linux user and I was hoping that there are some experienced users around that could help me out with some questions.

I was hoping to get a gamepad/controller, but I'm a little stuck on which one to get.
The PlayStation ones and Xbox seem to get the most love.
So if you had to choose between those which one would you go with?

Concerning the PlayStation controllers I was wondering two things.
Do they still work when a game has either partial control support or only Xbox support mentioned in the description of the game?

And if one was to go with a PS controller would it be better to go with the latest model, or would something like the Dualshock 4 keep receiving
support for a while?
I realize that question is kind of speculative. But maybe somebody might know.

If these things have been discussed in other threads, a link would be greatly appreciated as well, cause I couldn't somehow find threads on this. Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong direction.

8bitdo. Preferably wired or USB dongle.

Bluetooth can be a bit finnicky.

Microsoft controllers are problematic on Linux. I tried many times, many tricks, it doesn't work. The DualSense (PS) controller works out of the box, both on cable and Bluetooth. It's just so much better.

Regarding your second question, games designed to Xbox controller works fine with my DualSense controller.

About Dualshock, I don't have it, don't know.

I can vouch for 8bitdo. Works very well for me and I'm running CachyOS as distro.

Thanks a lot for the answers!
I'm going to have a look at the 8bitdo controllers and the DualSense
