Steam Machine Upgradability?
Hopefully the components in the Steam Machine are easily upgradable. Then, it would be an amazing piece of hardware. I might even consider it even if my PC is like five times more powerful or something.

The sodimm and m.2 are upgradable.

CPU and GPU are soldered to the pcb.

:nkCool:
They should have used 2280 ssd sizes. I could see shipping with 2230 but this really limits it further if you can't put a more standard 2280 M2 in there.

You can put a full size m.2 in there.

It’s a mini PC with mostly soldered in laptop parts. RAM and Nvme can be upgraded but nothing else.

Potential alternative Steam Machines from Lenovo, Asus or Alienware may be stronger and upgradable
Valve will not be doing any 3rd party Steam Machines this time around. But they don't need to. Those companies could just come with their own. They just can't use the Steam Machine name/branding badge.

They can however use the Steam Included and Powered by SteamOS™ branding images.

The thing is confirmed to use "Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Modules" (SODIMM) RAM, a key indicator of the Steam Machine being made out of laptop parts.

This isn't an off the shelf ITX solution made out of desktop parts.

2280 M.2 NVMe SSD drives are frequently universal between laptops and desktops.

there are a very few desktop boards that use so-dimms
they have sockets for cpus that can be upgraded

most are itx and need the space for other compnents

ex.ASUS P8H67-I DELUXE
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-P8H67-I-DELUXE-REV-3-0/dp/B004QF0VFE
every inch of the board is used, even the cmos battery is in a stand up socket

It's the other way round. Not cut down desktop parts but rather mobile parts buffed with higher TDP.

Radeon 7600M with higher TDP. Basically this specs: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-7600m.c4014

Mobile Zen4 with TDP set to 30W like on a desktop. AMD Ryzen 5 7540U with desktop TDP but soldered in like on a mobile platform.
AMD classifies it as both: laptop and desktop part but it's in laptop category on their site: https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/7000-series/amd-ryzen-5-7540u.html

Steam machine is also using mobile ram kit. Mobile type BIOS.

No such thing as a "mobile type bios" so thats a weird claim.

And it also shows your knowledge is lacking thinking it would be cheaper to bin and overclock laptop parts than it would be to simply take flawed desktop parts.

Even sights like polygon and others know its cutdown desktop parts.

People only claim laptop parts because they want to try and make the GabeCube sound weak yet logic and part unit price make it clear they are using cut down desktop parts.

In what world do you think they would pay MORE for WEAKER parts?

What makes you think they'd try to push 40 more watts through a laptop GPU instead of cutting 35w from a desktop GPU?

Nothing you are saying makes any sense from a technical stand point.

I'd advice leaving your emotions at the door when thinking about machines.

Also using SODIMM means nothing. ITX boards using desktop parts have also used SODIMM.

The fact you thought that SODIMM use meant anything and you used the phrase "mobile type bios" tells me you are really lost.

SODIMM means nothing. SODIMM RAM been used in ITX systems with desktop parts, its not an indicator of anything to do with a PC other than saving space but it does indicate your lack of understanding.

So you decided to ignore that the steam machine's GPU matches the specs of 7600M - 28 compute units? For context, the desktop version of Radeon 7600 has 32 compute units according to TechPowerUp.

That the specs of the CPU matches AMD Zen4 mobile part with 30W TDP?
