Might want to put a tl;dr by the last paragraph . I was wondering where the question was, lol.
So say for example I have a gtx660 (plait model and is a blower type) and that bricks, if I replace it with the same gtx660 but that it's a Evga and fan model. I shouldnt have to mess or change anything should I?
No matter which GPU you choose. You will want to, if you can on the current system is wipe the GPU drivers untimely. Which us best done with the DDU app. Once wiped, shutdown the PC and swap out old for new. GTX 780 already requires 2x power connectors coming off the Power Supply so yes once new card is secure into the PCIE slot and screws applied to the rear bracket, connect all needed power connections. Then power on the system, once in Windows go online and download + install latest driver from either AMD or NVIDIA.
With RX 580, or GTX 1070, RTX 2060... you won't have to change any in-game settings or screen res, etc. As these would actually do better overall both with using less power and outputting higher game performance.
One reason I would advise against any GTX 700 series is soon these will be the next to be cut off soon from the NVIDIA drivers
She doesnt need anything more than a that though. She works all week and then goes on her pc 1 day a week and always just plays the same 3 games.
It would be a waste putting anything else in.
I've already got a spare 970 and her psu is a 750w version.
However it would be wasted putting it in that pc for how little she uses it etc.
Hence why I'd be looking for just another 780 (or 760) as from what I understand I can just swap the card out and not have to do anything else?
Short answer is, can you just link to the card?
Can you list all the games she is most interested in?
Seriously with the way the GPU market still is, your best bet is stick in that spare GTX 970 and call it a day. No extra money spent.
Even if you change from one nvidia to another of the same you always want to do a clean driver install after the new card is installed, just to sure no left over issues from the old card. But yes the old card obviously dying.
Pointless to go buying anything GT/GTX 7xx series.
Yeah, I goofed and thought you told him to buy another
Can get RX 580 4GB or 8GB brand new for under $200 USD
For a new in the box NVIDIA GPU you won't find anything below 350-400 really unless maybe RTX 2060 series or RTX 3050 series. But yes, these newer NVIDIA GPU it might come down to what Motherboard you have as far as them working at all. As older Legacy BIOS Motherboard usually would not work with GPUs above GTX 900 or 10 series
No, my bad. I meant, i thought you told him to get another 970 which confused me. What you're saying now makes sense to me.
That just replacing the same model with another should just be a straight swap and not me needing to mess with anything else
Even something like the gtx 1050 that I'm using would be better than a 780. The gtx 780 doesn't even have directx 12 support and has terrible efficiency when compared to a newer product.
I would recommend a gtx 1660 super.
I highly recommend to check all hardware, if everything is correctly plugged in and not lose.
So, cut off the power to your PC, then check all Hardware as well as cables etc.. Re-plugin all hardware at best, carefully.
Also clean up everything from dust, carefully. Do also check the CPU and GPU fans, if there is a 1cm thick "dust carpet" spotted. Fans can be cleaned with cotton swabs, but be careful to not to bend fans. A thick "dust carpet" might be under the CPU fan/cooler.
Afterwards do a complete full system wipe, a fresh and clean reinstall of your OS. It does also sound as something has corrupted your system with some faulty drivers/updates or such.
After a clean reinstall of your OS, do a minimal setup. "Manually" download and install just all neccessary drivers straight from specific manufacturers websites. If you run Windows 10/11, dont let Windows download your drivers at first, but later after your manual job.
Motherboard/Chipset drivers
Storage drivers
GPU drivers
...
Windows Updates
You can download all of these neccessary handful drivers before the wipe and put them onto a USB stick, if you are sure your OS is not contaminated by a virus. So the reinstallation process will be faster.
You will wonder how great and fast your PC will run with an awesome performance again.
P.s.: If you have a spare GTX 970, use it on your wifes PC... GPUs dont mature like wine does... but after everything I have mentioned above is done first, so test the current GPU first after mentioned steps: Clean hardware, clean PC case, clean OS. Good luck!
