Windows 11 is great. Windows 7 is not.
If your potato PC from 2009 cannot cope then it's time to move on. Windows 11 isn't terrible, your lack of modification or willingness to learn basic adjustments is the problem.

The endless complaints will continue. I look forward to January 2024.

HUBRIS! I'll rather lose steam than upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 with all it's bloatware! I'll keep my Windows 7 or a better options LINUX with WINE
You do realize that WINE is just an open-source malware emulator right? ("Malware" meaning Microsoft Windows.)

Q: I've done very little to look at Linux regard modern and semi-modern games. Is there much (or anything) here on Steam that runs a native Linux without WINE?

Back around 20+ years ago, I was running Freecol, FreeCiv, Cube, Assault Cube and Sauerbraten natively on FreeBSD. All were pretty good games except for that part where FreeCol started adding in new features without fixing bugs. (But there was a version which ran smoothly proved you saved and restored often enough.)

WINE is not an emulator, it is a translation layer (and in the acronym). There is an entire steam linux-native filter, just like MacOS (EDIT: Apparently steam has altered this since I last checked. In the "Your Store" submenu you can filter by SteamOS + Linux, which, indeed, also lists games confirmed fully functional through Proton. As a result, finding purely linux native games may be a bit more difficult.). There is a good bit. Steam's linux client (originally packaged for debian) also includes Steam's Proton variant of WINE, and GloriousEggroll has made some improvements on Proton. ProtonDB as well as WineHQ are good sources for compatibility checking; as much as I hesitate to mention it /r/gamingonlinux is good for native linux game suggestions (or the steam store page). I did manage to get steam running once, years ago, on PCBSD, though not much would work. That was many WINE versions ago, however.

Yes it's very easy to go and change Win10 or 11 to look like XP or 7 if you wish.

Or make Win11 look like Win10

I always preferred the 3rd party options anyways. Looks much better overall. If you remember WindowBlinds app. I always used that for Win2k/XP it was great for what it could do

Windows 7 was the last OS where you had control over what updates you get from Microsoft and what information you hand over to them. Windows 11 is just the latest step for MS to be able to combine all operating systems into one platform so they have less issues to support which makes sense but its a terrible performing OS with a lot of flaws and the free AV they give you is because they want to get real time info on making patches. If you are counting on that free AV they give to protect you then you are a moron. A moron. You better get a real AV.

Is the holdout more about conspiracy theories? I can see 10 and 11 offending conspiracy theorists.
why be concerned about it? as hardware changes, and it will and does, so does code. just like life, nothing stays the same. even linux has its changes and builds..

Every one of these Win7 users are all on super old PCs; it's quite obvious.

To be fair, why do i, the paying customer, have to be the one to adjust to them though? i don't know who said Windows 11 was terrible, but i wasn't even thinking about it! Why are you so defensive about it in the first place?

Meanwhile, a free program, Google Chrome just tells me "In order to get the latest updates, you'll need to upgrade to Windows 10" (i'm paraphrasing here but you get the point). Look how nice it is to me, even though i'm NOT paying it a damn cent!

Valve could learn a thing or two from them, instead of forced updates, locking people out of software they paid for! Or at least they could be selling Windows 10/11 here on Steam instead, that way i don't have to worry about getting it from a site i don't trust!

That argument won't fly here, lol. It will be argued that you're paying with your privacy somehow.

I'm not for or against that argument. I don't know what's being sold or bought by any of these guys. I'm just saying, expect to get nowhere with that as a piece of your defense.

Sorry, i forgot to point out that i wasn't even trying to update it. Everytime i launch Chrome for the first time(after PC boots up), it gives me that message. Then all i do is click the little x next to it to close it, and that was the end of it! None of this "Buy this/get that, or else!" kinda stunt that Valve is pulling here!
