Sony PS3 controller won't work
Hi.

So steam recognizes the ps3 controller, but it doesn't seem to work?
i also tried the scp toolkit as well, since i saw that was a possible solve..
I have windows 10
want to use the controller to play borderlands 2 (if that matters)

Go to the game properties in Steam and disable Steam Input.

You shouldn't need SCP Toolkit. Ensure you remove that fully from the system.

If still does not work try DS4-Windows. It supports PS3 controllers as well. If that works, ensure you have DS4-WINDOWS in OS Startup. But do not have any game clients such as Steam in OS Startup

None of those options worked for me. Thanks though.
The DS4 keeps going insane by saying the controller is removed every second.

PS3 controller is not the same as the ps4 controller and you will need a driver for it to work on windows.
I have heard you can get a driver from PS Now but I have not tried that as PS Now is not available in Australia.
To get it to work with DS4windows you will need the DsHidMini driver.
https://ds4-windows.com/supported-controllers/
https://github.com/ViGEm/DsHidMini
I used to use the SCP Toolkit in the past and only wired as the Bluetooth add on for SCP Toolkit messed up the Bluetooth so it was only usable for the ps3 controller and nothing else.

PS Now is no longer a thing. Sony killed that off.

Yes I realize it's not the same driver; however the latest DS4-Windows supports Sony DS3, DS4 and DS5 controllers.

Need to ensure that you use the Sony DS3 data-sync USB cable that they give you with a DS3 controller, or from a PS3 console. Regular off-the shelf USB cables will not work with DS3 controllers. It might work for data, but it will not charge them.

yeah but I have the latest version of ds4windows, I'v been using it for years and you will still need to find and install the DsHidMini driver.

Ok. Also keep in mind that your will want DS4-Windows app in OS Startup. As this must start before Game Clients/Games in order to function properly.

Therefore, DO NOT put any game clients in OS Startup.

I'm sorry i only saw this now.

So scptoolkit was the only thing that worked / downloaded drivers for xbox controller
then turned off steam input in the settings on steam.

For some reason, just having ps3 controller drivers isn't enough

You pretty much need to fake an Xbox driver to get any kind of response from a PS3 controller in the overwhelming majority of PC games, so that's definitely the way to go about it.

The good news is that SCPToolkit, when set up that way, is really reliable. You just jump into any game and it'll interpret it as an Xbox controller.
The downside is that you may have to turn off Steam Input for some games or else you might have two systems accessing your controller at the same time.

That also means the button prompts will always be of Xbox-make, but there isn't really an alternative to this unless someone has made a mod for a particular game first.
Check the PCGamingWiki in case there exists a mod to change button prompts manually.
Besides, the 360 controller layout is identical to the PS3 one anyway, so you are not losing any buttons by doing this.

Just a tip, if you really like the PS3 controller design then I recommend one of 8bido's Pro+ controllers. Very similar to PS3 and pretty much plug and play.

Yes 8bido controllers are very nice. Plug and play. Seen on PC as an Xbox controller for maximum compatibility. All while offering various physical layouts. Such as the DS3 style of controller layout.
