2080 super good enogh for 1440p gaming ?
hey fellas i hope you are having a good day.
im planing to go from 1080p to 1440p, naturraly that is more taxing for the gpu, my question is, can my gpu still hold, or should i just get a 24 inch 1080p monitor and be done with it. thanks

I used to play games at 4k on a GTX 960. Statistically speaking, it is unlikely that you'll need a good GPU to play games at 2560x1440 or even 3840x2160. The most popular games on Steam continue to include Skyrim, Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, Terraria, Left 4 Dead 2, etc. If you seriously think you need a 4090 to play Skyrim, go ahead and waste your money, I guess.
The 2080 super should easily play 1440p. I've used rtx 3060, rtx 2060 super, rtx 2060 12g, Rx 6700.. they all do 1440p gaming and the 2080 super should be no different.

I'm using Rx 6700 for over a year now for 1440p ultra wide curved 120hz gaming.

The 2080 will struggle in some of the more demanding games. My RTX 3080 FE is struggling and it's a generation ahead of yours.

Not everyone is stuck 1-2 decades into the past playing video games. There are newer video games that have come out that are more demanding. Games that your GTX 960 can't run well. Let alone at 4k.

funny me and you have had the exacts same gpu's in the past haha, you combo is very nice, gives me hope that i can actually run some decent games if i decid to get 1440p, thanks for your insight buddy you were really helpfull

Depends on the game and whether or not high fps is required as opposed to image quality.

I've had a 27 inch 1440p 165 Hz monitor for 3 years paired with an RTX 2070 Super, it's not as 'good' as 4K but it's so much better than 1080p. especially in the level of detail that it can detliver

the 2070 s and 2080 s are very close, so i guess you could say that i can run some games, well my expectations are realistic, i want to run latest game in medium settings to try and hit a accepteable framerate, what do you think

First, your processor also plays a role in it. Second, part of it depends on the games you'll be playing, and part of it depends on the settings.

There are P.C. game spec. spreadsheets kind of help us anticipate what's needed, and I'm getting the sense that if you want to get a lock on 60 F.P.S. at 1080p you need to try to stick to recommended specs. rather than minimum specs.

The Last of Us Part I[www.gamespot.com] wants a 2070 super for 60 F.P.S. @ 1080p at high settings, and a 2080 ti for the same at 1440p. That was already released about a year ago, and you also have to figure that games get more demanding as time goes by, so I'd possibly want to stick at 1080p with a 2080 super.

The minimum spec. for that game doesn't look too terribly high either based on minimum spec. For some games like Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty minimum spec. is 6700k[support.cdprojektred.com] for a lock on 1080p 30, although the recommended settings for 1080p 60 on high are lower. RTX 2060 Super. C.D. Projekt Red doesn't give specs. for 1440p. I'd suppose a 2080 super might be able to push 1440p decently it since it falls pretty squarely between the 2060 super and the RTX 3080

Spiderman Remastered requirements don't look especially high, You can push 4k @ 60 very high in rasterization with a 3070[www.pcgamesn.com], and I would assume a 2080 super would be comparable to that, but the thing I want to point out about this sheet is that it's also claiming 1080p 60 is the recommended spec.

Hogwarts Legacy was the best selling game last year, and from that we see an RTX 2080 ti is wanted to push 1440p 60 at ultra[www.hogwartslegacy.com]. Ultra settings are kind of past the point of diminishing returns though, so if you dial down the presets to high, I imagine your 2080 super would more than suffice for 1440p in that game.

However, the thing I really want to point out is that between all of these sheets, recommended spec. is 1080p 60 at medium or high, so if we have to look at a game that doesn't provide the full specs. we assume recommended means 1080p 60 at an appreciable level of detail since that sees to be industry standard.

Now let's take a look at some of the top sellers of this year so far[www.gamespot.com]:

Helldivers 2[www.playstation.com]

1440p High @ 60
12600k/RTX 3070
1080p Medium @ 60
9700k/2060

I'm guessing a 2080 Super can push 1080p high or maybe 1440p medium.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare[www.callofduty.com]

Recommended (high settings): 6700k with 1080 ti, 6600 xt or rtx 3060

In terms of the 2000 series, I'd peg that at RTX 2070 level, so I'd assume a 2080 super could push 1440p.

Elden Ring[x.com]

Ryzen 3600/1070

Yeah, you could do 1440p on this game with a 2080 super

Dragon's Dogma II:[www.dsogaming.com]

Capcom based their entire spec. sheet on 30 F.P.S., and an rtx 2080 only just meets medium requirements at 1080p. A 2080 super isn't much stronger. 1440p high is looking at a 12700k running on D.D.R. 4 and a 3080 ti.

Final Fantasy VII rebirth

You'll smash this at 1440p.

Tekken 8:

Recommended spec. is 7700k with a 2060, so I think you could play this at 1440p if you can set the resolution that high.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth:

4790/ 2060 for recommended spec.

I think you could play this at 1440p with a 2080 super.

Thoughts:

I'd probably recommend sticking with your current monitor at 1080p. Some of these games are starting to push an RTX 2070 at just 1080p, and you probably want some headroom to grow. You can push the settings up from medium to high were applicable to make use of some oomph, and these recommendations are probably for raw rasterization. When you bought an RTX graphics card, I assume you cared about Ray Tracing somewhat, and that causes perf. to tank.

If you're going to buy a new monitor though, that can be a rather long term investment that follows you along longer than your current P.C. build, and you can make use of it in the here and now so I wouldn't exactly advise buying a 24" 1080p monitor, and those 1440p O.L.E.Ds. at $600 are looking pretty nice right around now.

i depends on the game. older games will run well even on slower gpus while newer games will run better in lower resolutions.

this is jsut fantastic, thanks for this amazing summary buddy, i guess ill buy a 1440p monitor then, you had me at "long term invesment", since it is a monitor, your gonna stick with it and thats a very good point.

also, you pointed out very clearly that this card can push at 1440p somewhat, i guess ill crank down the setting a bit or even go for FHD in the case where 2080s can't handle some games.

again, thanks again buddy, you were really really helpfull
