xbox controller has overnight become a generic mouse pointer

would anyone know how or why my controller does not function as it should inside or out of a game and just behaves like a mouse input with any app opened?

its steam mapping the controller to k/m inputs for desktop use, or games not launched from steam

steam -> settings -> controller -> desktop
browse configs and pick disabled or default xbox mappings
and apply

True. Your answer's way better I think OP should go with that. Though they say that it happens without Steam on so I guess it's something else? Another game launcher, Xbox stuff, etc?

OP do you have any other app that is related to gaming or controllers? Also are there any strange apps in the "Startup" tab in Task Manager?

no strange apps running at startup but can find many services running of witch make my head spin
so i have now disabled all apps at startup except the xbox app* wish me luck

have the xbox controller app used to update, only controller apps I have that am aware of
my laptop runs geforce and the omen gaming apps but I rarely use them

I do use the ea launcher through steam and battlnet. only other launchers but they don't run at startup

check what its set for and set it to none or default xbox

Uninstall it in Device Manager and manually reinstall the device driver. If you don't have it you can get it from the online Microsoft download catalog
