Laptop advice? ( switching from desktop?)
Thinking about selling my desktops and switching to a gaming laptop, something high end. I'm just skeptical about the life span and performance of the things, in my mind I've always thought 2 years tops, which if true is a no-go for me.

Also I know NOTHING about laptops, brands, what's quality and what's trash. Being desktop guy last 15 years I just know intel good, nvidia good.

My current rig is i9 13900kf, rtx 4090, 32gb ddr5, 1tb m.2 and Yada Yada.

Please educate me on how your experience has been with gaming laptops, and lemme know the highest quality ones on the market now.

i havent seen any laptops with more than 1 year warranty so be careful its risky

During sales you can get one fro under $1100 with a 4060 and 144 hz.

Extended warranties are common, that is if you really want to shell out for them.

You just missed Lenovo Legion's headstart sales with their brand new Gen 9 models and so decreased prices.

I got a:

Legion Pro 7i 16 Gen 9
i9-14900HX
RTX 4090
2x 16 GB DDR5 5600 MHz
2x 1 TB NVMe M2. SSDs

Heads up, Legions are notoriously shady. The wifi card screws up the laptop and causes it to crash. Even after a repair the thing still crashed repeatedly. I still have no clue what caused it.

I got suckered by the good reviews, too. They are completely unreliable. Just got my refund for it after less than three years of use. Not worth the price at all.

DO NOT BUY FROM LENOVO!

Laptop advice?... switching from PC to a "gaming laptop"

To put it bluntly and as truthfully as possible....it's a BAD idea.

Like I said before, think of how hot your PC gets when you game for an hour, but your PC has fans and your components have room to breathe and air for the heat to escape now think of how compact and how there is no way for the heat to escape out of a laptop, frankly it should be a no brainer when you think about it for a minute, but it seems you didn't. That's why you're getting clown arards.

Well, which model did you use? A paper-made budged model? From which year?

Nohting compareable of today's tech ..

I have experienced NOT A SINGLE ISSUE .. of the Pro 7i Gen 9
And wifi cards can be exchanged easily .. just as a SSD or RAM ..

Sometimes there are faulty hardware included .. no matter the brand and model, but you can replace these .. besides CPU and GPU ..

Or maybe you simply handled your laptop worse, didnt use it on stable surfaces but in your bed, on carpets or blankets ... no wonder ..

16'' 100% DCI-P3 IPS, 240 Hz, etc
..for 3200 EUR factory new. You now would pay for that model 4000 EUR ..

just check my Steam Profile and you find all that stuff ..

That RTX 4090 Mobile is as strong as a RTX 3090 desktop variant or as the 4070 S..

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 is the best gaming laptop ever ..
Robust, very high quality, no issues ..

For some games you need to undervolt and underclock the 14900HX though, or it would overheat and throttle .. I found a mix between undervolting and underclocking, from 5.8 GHz to 5 GHz .. you can easily do that through Lenovo Vantage and perfectly adjust settings as well as with HWiNFO's help .. !! So CPU temperatures wont reach 90°C (Conan Exiles) .. and your fans run 1 - 2 levels lower !! You can all the time enable and disable your undervolt and underclock settings through Lenovo Vantage by a simple click, if needed.

The RTX 4090 GPU always stays below ~65°C (yet) as the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 ADDITIONALLY includes liquid metal cooling. Tested by playing Conan Exiles on Ultra settings for an hour or two ..

I highly recommend an IPS screen, as IPS screens are high-end stuff. These screens are heavily sharp as intended, while these new Mini-LED screens are blurry and cause artifacts due to its technology.. this crap is highly disturbing ..

I had tested a bunch of gaming laptops of various brands for past 2 years, and ANY of these were cheaply produced and manufactured. Missing features, too much of RBG circus BS ..

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 = Best of the Best !! HIGHEST QUALITY !!

It has instantly exchanged my older and loyal laptop ..

Also it was important for me to have a NumPad, and keyboard backlight auto-off's. All these other brands do either have keyboard lights permanently ON or OFF, which sux.. !!

Additionally, Lenovo Legion is highly compatible to Microsoft Windows 11 as these both work closely together. It instantly finds all neccessary updates. After a fresh and clean install all you need to manually install are the WLAN/WiFI drivers, if you are not wired. That is all .. Epic stuff !! No "forced" updates .. you are free whatever you like to do ..

There are Lenovo Legion Pro 9i Gen 9 models, but i do not recommend it as you pay 1000 EUR more just for a carbon case instead aluminium and it has more blink blink circus BS .. as well as that crappy Mini-LED.

Also the Pro 9i models are harder to switch hardware as you need to disassemble that whole thing. The Pro 7i is way easier. You can exchange all hardware except CPU and GPU, as usually .. just by removing the backplate of the aluminium case.

Gaming Laptops hold longer than 5 years.. dont worry .. just take care of them and use laptops on stable flat surfaces ONLY .. !! Remove dust and clean hardware twice a year .. Undervolt and underlock your CPU, if neccessary and as mentioned above ..

Lenovo Legion supports warranty of MINIMUM 2 years which is generally included. You can even extend its warranty by paying a few bucks more ..

Also I been this lucky and their promised 99.9 Wh battery was a 105 Wh !!!

I am ultra happy !! It is an absolute masterpiece !!

Legion Pro 7i 16 Gen 9 is the way to go !! On their shop site you can even select parts for your own customized lappy .. which then might cost approx ~150 EUR more for your own customization.

Ps:
The Intel 14th Gen is the last generation of mega power. The result of 20 years research, as it has just reached max performance..

The next CPU generations for next years are built completely from scratch. New technologies, built for better power efficiency, with less cores and less power ...

Intel are also rebranding their names. These "NEXT GENERATION" CPUs which are built from scratch are called "Ultra" Cores ..

Good Luck & Have fun !!

:cwat:
Thank you this was more the type of answer I was looking for. Someone that seems like they have experience and know their stuff.

I understand the difference between the two machines but I don't think that gaming laptops would be as popular as they are if they were just built as poorly as you seem to think they are.

It was a Lenovo 5 from 2020.(Ryzen 7 4800H, RTX 2060

Yeah, I didn't notice a single issue until after the year warranty lapse. lol. Good luck with that.
It's still something I'm looking into guys I'm not an impulse buy guy that makes these rash decisions on a whim. I'm gonna continue to look into this in the following weeks and find out as much as I can. I have 2 desktop pcs if anything maybe I'll just get rid of one.

Are Ryzens that bad?

Kind of glad I switched to Intel if that's the case.

But you realize that even Intel has known defects and design flaws, right? https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/04/supply-chain-snafu-causes-intel-and-others-to-ship-hackable-hardware-for-5-years/

Don't buy a laptop for gaming as you will be buying one every 3 years or so to keep up unless you buy the upgradable Dell Laptop/Desktop shells.

OP needs to receive a lot more clown awards for this post.
Why? I'm not trolling, I'm not posting this to get attention or useless steam points to spend to decorate my profile with BS nobody is ever gonna see. I'm looking for info from people that have firsthand experience that are maybe more educated on this than myself.

Going into this I knew that laptops are less powerful, they get hot and can be noisy. That's the extent of my knowledge. However I have friends that use them for gaming and have had no issues.

Realistically speaking my current machine can run anything at max, 1440p 144hz no issues no lag period. What I'm looking for is a laptop that can meet those same expectations and from what I see spec-wise and benchmarks on laptops currently is that they can do just that. I am skeptical about the trade offs that this might entail and am wanting to know more, so instead of just writing me off as oh look he's a clown lol, let's just try a more reasonable approach.

That's the power of advertising and demand if peoples want something Co. will make it happen regardless if it's good or not. They give you what you want.
They're popular because people's lack of knowledge about the basic principles of heat and the dissipation of it in confined places

Yea but my point was that if they had such short lifespans and thermals were that big of an issue wouldn't they not be as popular as they are?
