Grinding Sound? - Final Outcome Below. Final Final Update.
When I start up Steam Gaming Site on my computer I get a grinding sound. When I shut Steam Gaming down the grinding quits. The gpu 1080ti card is 5-6 years old and has ran quite until now. I have checked the fans, they seem fine. Any Ideas?

Also I cleaned all the fans and checked the fans on the gpu, they looked fine. The games also seem to take a dive once in a while like from 100fps down to 20fps with a little lag for about 1 minute or less.

Like now it's went quite with Steam on, but not playing a game. But it always starts up making the noise when I start Steam.

I've heard about a whine or rattle that can develop when something's vibrating. Coil Whine I think.
I need a new card anyway, I have an i&-9700 32gb ram, 1080ti (which still runs just about everything at some level, ha.

thoughts on noise?

thanks

The HD's were ok, but it says it checking files for errors. I don't think a bearing would show up on that kind of test?

Listening for the noise when the drive spins up. Hdds usually spin up for a bit at start up.

Probably the gpu fan. The one stopped fan might require an extra push/power to start spinning. Just a guess. Should be easy to figure out.

most gpus only have 1 fan controller and sense rpm from 1 fan
while all fans run off the controllers power and pwm signal

if you stop the gpu fan that is rpm monitored, it will turn the fan speed to 100% since it has no idea if the other fans are spinning or not

Ok, that makes sense as the MSI program also showed only 1 fan with 1 temp sliders. I'm not sure how to turn the main fan off. I followed some of their directions, but nothing actually said: Fans Off!!.

I had the sliders all the way to the left, then I broke the chain link to what I thought was "Off", but nothing changed. It did make the noise during this function I had going. But it was quite for a long time. Then I went back to Default, I think, ha.

I've got the computer closed back up and in it's cubby hole. So it has to tell me it stopped them, I never saw that.

anyway, back to golf.
thanks a bunch and I'll still be here for a while if another idea pops up.

It's one of a few things.

A hard drive. Disconnect all hard drives and see if the noise goes away. If it does, introduce hard drives one by one until the noise returns.

A fan. You can try and rule these out if you trust yourself by carefully (!) stopping each fan one at a time with a finger (or better yet, disconnecting a single fan for each run, but it's more time since you'll be shutting down and connecting/disconnecting a fan between each run; the PC is unlikely to overheat without one fan for a short test run and if it does, it will shut down, so this method is viable but more time and effort).

Coil whine. This can be the GPU, PSU, or sometimes the motherboard. There's nothing you can physically do to test for this one as far as I know, but you can isolate it by trying to listen where it comes from. If it's during a game, it's usually the GPU or PSU. Motherboard is rare and usually happens in other odd situations (like under certain CPU loads, or even when moving the mouse).

My guess would be GPU or PSU coil whine based on your description, but you also said it just showed up. While audible coil whine can show up, it's very rare to my understanding (it's usually always there), so this makes me think a fan could be developing issues.

I also think it's the gpu as if you had read the book. I answered most of those questions or ideas, ha. TL;DR we've got 2 for gpu.

Next option, my buddy's neice is a nurse and her son is a doctor. I'm going a stethoscope from them and solve this riddle.

look for a new cooler on ebay or amazon for that gpu brand/model
_I_ 16. juni 2024 kl. 15.22
no
what brand/model gpu is it?
use gpuz to find out if you are not sure

run it, and click the lookup button

When I start up Steam Gaming Site on my computer I get a grinding sound.

One of your GPU fan bearings are going bad, when the game starts the fans kick in high gear and that's when you hear the noise. you will not hear it when they spin at low revs

That's pretty much where we're at, you make 3, thanks.

I think I'm going to max out my 1151 socket on my mother board and upgrade the gpu. I've only got about 11 inches of width for a card. The one I have found that will fit is a 4070 White it's called. A super or ti are both too wide to work. But that's all I need.

Ok, if I go that route before I upgrade I'll check it out.

thanks for your help

It's not bad enough to effect the temp.

I'm wait on my Quantum Computer to show up from NASA. They say they are working on cooling also!

Fans, optical drive, mechanical hard drive.

I just figured it was gpu card somehow. Cause there's something with games that is causing the noise. It's quite now with Steam on, but when I started Steam it grinded for about 30 seconds or more. Sometimes it's constant for a while.

But, like my radio station says, "if your car is making a knocking sound, you don't have the music turned up enough."

thanks

That's coil whine. It can vary in pitch based on FPS and power loads.
If games are running good at like 60-120 FPS and then take a sharp dive down to 20 or below; that means you might need to remove and clean the GPU and/or replace the paste; as it's quite obviously thermal throttling. Or might need to replace the GPU fans. You can buy replacements for GPU fans on places like Newegg, Amazon, Ebay.

Try enforcing a 60 FPS Limit and see how the noise pitch changes. The pitch usually can get more erratic and louder with higher FPS; when the noise is a coil whine issue. But then again, it might not be your GPU doing that; it could be the Motherboard or the PSU.
