New graphics card, need help!
Hey everyone, I just purchased a NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti for my computer. I play games such as Planet Coaster/Zoo, Sims 4, and other building games. Ive installed my GPU and drivers. I am noticing no difference between my new GPU and my old.
I know bare minimum about computers, and I was wondering if maybe the other components of my PC aren't running well together with my new GPU, and if i need to purchase a new CPU or something. HELP!

My PC Specs:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

Driver 561.09

AMD FX(tm) - 4300 Quad Core Processor

15.98 GB RAM

1920x1080 60Hz

Your processor requires a change.
You're basicly running a 12 years old dual-core processor.

Better get new RAM, motherboard and CPU

Its the CPU holding you back. The FX-4300 is quite weak, specially by modern standards. Weak enough that regardless of which of the two cards is faster, both are likely being held back.

Without swapping your whole system, and assuming you have an OK motherboard, you can probably slot in an FX8350. Its still quite slow by modern standards (slower than an R3/i3) but it will be *much* more servicable for gaming. They average around $65 buy it now on ebay, and can be had cheaper local or in auction. If you are runnings stock cooling look into a Hyper 212 or similar ~$30 120mm tower cooler to get the FX8 properly cooled.

If you want more modern performance that wont hold the 1080ti back pickup a newer r3/i3 build from either AMD or Intel, but know it will require a full new core build with motherboard and ram to match.

FWIW, I still have an FX8350 in service, and last year (2023) I pulled it out of server status and pushed it into mainline service for 1 week for its 10 year build anniversary. I normally use an R9-5950x, so I am familiar with high end performance.

It was indeed slower, but for daily use tasks though the slowness was noticeable it was not impactfull in any way. It went fine. For gaming it def cant push my 165hz screen at 165fps, but in all games I tried it was able to push a fairly solid 60fps average and it was totally usable for an enjoyable gaming experience over the course of the week.

It is slow, but it is still serviceable for any games that dont require AVX.

Thanks guys, yeah my brother built me this PC a long time ago, and i dont know much about computers. I think I may return the GPU and start fresh with a new PC. Thanks for all the information!

fx4 is so slow compared to any intel i series or amd ryzen
and its 2 cores with smt, not 4 cores
amds core vs thread lawsuit should have covered all fx cpus, not just fx 8-9

its a very poor match with a 1080ti even for 1440p or 4k for the games the cpu can handle

Wow that AMD CPU is from 2012. It is 12 years old.
Insufficient memory to run Windows and also game.
GPU is old but it appears it has 11 gigs internal memory which is amazing for a 9 year old GPU.

You need a better C.P.U. The cheapest option is to buy an FX 8320 for about $26.[www.ebay.com] It still won't be strong enough to take full advantage of a 1080, but I doubt you're ready to build a whole new computer yet.

Since you can refund the graphics card and are willing to use secondhand parts, an 8320 with 1050 ti would be borderline usable.

Cause the Fx4 is junk. You would need at least an FX 6300 or better and if your Motherboard is PCIE 2.0 that's another limiting factor.

I've had no issues using an FX 8350 + GTX 1080 Ti and it blows the GTX 970/980 RX 580/590 away easily. No problem getting 50-90 FPS with RDR2 all cranked up at 1080p. I gave that PC to a family member a few years back and it's still rock solid.

CPU bottleneck

a FX type is ancient, sometimes a older processor can be paired with a newer one however

take my setup for example, i run a i7-3770K and it runs just fine with a 1660 Ti, gets smooth 60 FPS in even intensive games(tested on medium graphics)

Keep the 1080ti as it can still play 99.99% of all games at great/good rates, most will tell you that "you need RTX 4 or 5" but you don't. If you want to throw money at a PC for eye candy that"s fine but it"s not required. You also don't have to spend a lot to have a solid PC, just grab something like the I3 12100f or Ryzen 5 4600 both under 100 dollars, pair with a decent motherboard and 16gb of correct ram.
I downgraded to the I3 12100f myself to get rid of the high power draw and heat years ago. Plays all the games I want to smoothly.

Keep the 1080 Ti, definitely but the rest of that PC, it's really time you step into THIS decade and get at least a modern AM4 based config or perhaps Intel 12th Gen. Then you'll be able to play anything you throw at it quite well. You will also need DDR4 or DDR5 RAM depending on what all you go with.

yeah no.....bought a AMD 555 and turned it in to a real quad core with core unlocker.....80 bucks for a CPU that can still play a lot of things today was a better deal.....

You have a dismal cpu, which was fairly poor when released 12 years ago.
I suggest a whole new cpu/motherboard/memory setup.
Even a lowish end modern setup would be a big improvement.

Regardless of what graphics card you would've bought, that FX-4300 would've held it back, you need a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM

you'd be fine with a Ryzen 5 3600 or 5500, any B450 or B550 motherboard, and 2x8 or 2x16GB DDR4-3200 if you can't afford much
