win 10 pro, can not activate win 11 home... the key only works for the same version, i have tried and it has never worked even once.
ie.. win 10 pro to win 11 pro, same goes for others.
and the iso you get from microsoft, has all the versions on the same iso (ie... win 11 iso with all win 11 versions and same for win 10 iso), you run the installer and choose the correct version and it installs.
if you actually have win 11 home, im going to "assume" the win 10 pro key, isnt activated and you need to reinstall with win 11 pro as your option, then the key will activate.
since when and why do they state it cant, also why couldnt i get it to work?
just did a quick google, didnt see anything saying you could activate a differing win 11 version with a wrong version of win 10.
yet i can install both and try it right now and it wont work and tells me to install the correct version for the key im using, or microsoft saying you have to use the same version....
have to ask it despite hating hearing it demanded, but i will have to see proof of that, as everything points to "no you cant".
been around pc's since the 80's, never seen anyone use a key and get it activated on the incorrect version, not once, but only seen a key activate on the version the key is for.
If you have a Win10 Home Key, you are stuck with Win10/11 Home.
Now you can pay to upgrade the OS within itself through Microsoft, via the Store app.
Such as Win10 Home, using that key to install Win11 Home for free off of that old Win10 key, then once inside Win11 Home, pay to upgrade to Pro. Yes you can do that.
When you make either a Win10 or Win11 usb flash drive (each OS must have its own flash drive); during the installer, you CAN select to INSTALL any EDITION you wish. However that does not have anything to do with Product Keys and are never required to input one during Win10/11 installations. This is due to the fact any user on any supported PC can install any edition of Win10 or 11 they want, without any requirement to ever activate it. Activation is 100% optional. However if I go and install whatever edition; Home, Pro, Educational, Business, Enterprise... Win10 and 11 WILL ALLOW you to enter a key from any of these editions, from within any of these editions. So let's say I go and install Win11 Home, I own absolutely no keys what so ever. Then I go online and buy a Win10 or 11 PRO key. Win11 will allow you to enter that key into the OS (in the Activation section) and once activated your OS will get transformed into the proper edition right away. Microsoft does this to basically allow ease of use and also allow any user to freely test any consumer edition. The only one you can't test for free like that is Windows Server, which has it's own separate download.
And of course, if you installed 32bit, such as Win10 32bit and want to move to Win10 64bit or Win11 (which is only 64bit); you must perform a complete clean install of the 64bit. You can't directly and/or in-place upgrade from 32bit OS to 64bit.
What I also would advise anyone using Win10 to check out Win10 Debloater as well as ExplorerPatcher. Same for Win11 users but without the Debloater. In Win11 to do this, for the most part all you need is EdgeRedirector ran and configured and you'll be able to enable the EU mode of options in any country using Win11 so you can then have options to uninstall things like Edge and OneDrive.
i've only used pro on this pc, bought prebuilt for gpu in scalpdemic and instantly upgraded from win 10 home to pro. and there was no option to select which edition of windows in the media creation tool. i suppose iso image option gives you the choice
i'm retarded but not retarded enough to pull keys out my ass and use them without realising. win 11 home was already activated from win 10 pro after the install. had my win 10 pro key written down ready
Because when you make your Win10 or 11 USB Flash Drive, ALL the consumer editions (except for China edition) are all included in one installer. You can choose your WinOS Edition to install DURING the actual installer process. When asked for a product key, you can click "I dont have one" and then it would ask which edition to install.
If you had a prebuild, then it most likely already had its Win11 digital license already.
Or it says Win11 Home because it's going off the digital license already assigned to it from when Win10 Home was activated.
If you actually clean installed Win11 Home, and then once inside the OS, input your old Win10 Pro key, this would convert the current Win11 over to Pro.
I've done this for many people on both Win10 / 11 Home already, where their PC either came with Home Edition or they did not know which to install during a clean install so they selected Home Edition. Then we simply go back into the Activation section in the OS and enter a new product key for either PRO and ENTERPRISE and the OS will change to that edition on the fly and have it's available options. Sometimes you might need to reboot to fully see all available features of said OS Edition, but the Edition definitely changes in the system details once a higher edition key is activated.
You can get Win10 / 11 Pro keys for around $20-25 and Enterprise keys for around $35.
Don't limit yourself and your system by sticking Home Edition on any PC, it's really dumb. It's like saying >>> YES, I ENJOY having limited options and even paid to have that experience. Without Group Policy, MS basically has control of your OS, not you.
i don't really care since i got an unlimited use pro key free and i've used it for like 5 computers, just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas
Bottom line, your PC came with Win10 Home, which comes pre-activated out the box from the brand maker already. When you installed Win11, it used the WINDOWS 10 HOME EDITION DIGITAL LISENCE to activate Win11 Home. Make sense? Good, hope you learned something.
You state your Win10 PRO KEY, activated your Win11 HOME; anyone with > this much < common sense should know that makes 0% sense at all.
Let me clarify what could have occurred, again.
Your Pro Key failed to take, so it simply used the Win10 Home digital license to activate Win11, which would force it to be Win11 Home.
What happened with your Pro Key entry? Well, basically this...
The upgrade error 0xc004f050 typically occurs when the users try to upgrade their Windows Home version to Windows Pro. It is usually triggered if you are trying to enter a product key that cannot be used to activate Windows, the activation servers are busy, or the system is experiencing a hardware-related problem.
You can check this by opening cmd/terminal and enter:
If either of both output a license key, your machine has an implemented OEM key, probably HOME which has been installed rather than your PRO license... so:
Open install media on USB
Traverse to "\sources" directory
Delete "pid.txt" and EI.cfg
The PID-file includes a (GENERIC/Evaluation) KEY and controls/forces during setup which edition to be installed as Home, Pro, Enterprise !
The EI-file controls/forces which edition to be installed as volume, retail, oem .. !
With both files deleted from the Install Media, during Windows install you can select your desired edition as Professional, which then needs to be activated via a geniune key/license after installation.
After removing both files from the install media, then:
Afterwards you should be able to enter and activate your PRO key through WIndows Activation menu. If your hardware has changed, there is a troubleshoot ..
There may be a common issue happening also. If this issue still persists, either use the mentioned Microsoft troubleshoot during actiavation, or enter an OFFICIAL from Microsoft hosted "Generic Windows 10/11 Pro Key", so your licensed HOME will be correctly changed into PRO due to this special issue. This of course only works with genuine PRO licenses which have installed HOME instead.
That official Generic Key for Win10/11 Pro ends with ****-3V66T, search thorugh the web.
The upgrade path for a free upgrade from Windows 7 to 10/11 has been disabled last year.
If it is a Retail Key to be unlimited used for one but different machine, login into your Microsoft Account[account.microsoft.com], remove your linked machine there, wait a few minutes, reboot your machine, then try again to enter and activate your Pro key through Windows.
If this still doesnt work, login with your MS Account on Windows after your linked machine have been removed, then add again your Pro key for activation. So your current machine will be again linked with your RETAIL account ..
Good Luck ..
There is also a way to completely empty your machine from licenses and keys via a handful of cmd commands, besides that potential integrated OEM key in BIOS, so you can enter your (new) key with success, if your machine has been unlinked before as described above.
Yes, this stuff is complex ...
