$600 gaming desktop?
Edit: I'm at a $600 budget now. Information on linux (Ubuntu in particular) would be appreciated.
I'd also like to know what to avoid when picking parts. Please try to keep answers simple if possible :)

Actually for games like HL2, CSS, DoDS, TF2; you could just build a AMD FM2/APU setup. Long as you still get a decent enough CPU, so that results is a decent enough onboard GPU.

> decent CPU cooler (like a CoolerMaster HyperTX3 or Hyper212, both of which are cheaply priced)

> 4GB RAM minimum
> 500GB HDD minimum
> 64bit OS (Win7 SP1 preferably)
> fairly priced PSU that still has good enough quality, such as Corsair CX500 (minimum)

And the AMD FM2 motherboard will still have a current gen PCI Express X16 slot so adding a much more powerful dedicated GPU down the road is easily an option.
This is all very true - I have an A10 APU build in a console sized case with plans to upgrade with a discrete GPU and larger case when I need to/have space to...

However, even that can't be done for $200 - needs $350 minimum for an A8 APU (I wouldn't go lower than that because then you end up with a dual core CPU)

Dual core CPU is fine for gaming, as long as you're not playing something like Skyrim or something 2 cores is fine

Maybe get an used newer one? combine with the one u have.. It is VERYVERY hard to complete THAT mission though. I did mine for 400 euro (+/- 600 dollars) and i think that is cheap. Best save up for next month. bet there will be discounts. ;-D

As long as u do remember the chain is as strong as its weakest link. Balance all and u be fine.

As long as he's not buying a 780ti he should be good

What out there is dual core now? Nothing except maybe i3 or FX-4xxx
Even though FX-4xxx is quad, it is not equal to most quads.
And no point in buying some old junk, like Core2Duo or Athlon II, etc.

Anyway, look the problem here is that any of the upper two (i3 or FX-4) do not have a GPU that can run Source games (which is sad). At least with a decent AMD APU, it will have a more than capable GPU for what he wants to do, yet u will spend about the same for an APU as you will for i3.

U really want to build, let me know I'll help u out.

If he wants to play anything remotely demanding, I stand by my recommendation of a quad core. The other problem with going below an A8 is you lose GPU power - as it is the A8 is only good for medium/high 720p and older games at 1080p: I have an A10 and some games need to be scaled back to 1680 x 1050 as it is

The best AMD APU is still far inferior to any discrete GPU, and OP said he's going to save $600 for a rig.

It's inferior to any half decent discrete GPU, yes - the iGPU in an A10 is roughly equivalent to an HD 6670 (possibly slightly better actually) so anything better than that and a discrete GPU wins.

I'm not sure why you posted links to Intel CPUs... please explain?

If the OP is going to save up for a $600 rig, then he absolutely should not get an APU - I'm merely trying to confirm that it can't be done for $200 and that a dual core is an unwise CPU choice in this day and age.

I don't think you're going to be building a new one for that price. I would probably be looking for a used one on ebay.

I don't think you need that since you probably have a monitor, keyboard and mouse, but it's an example.

You have a vaild point, sir. I posted the links because Bad Motha said there's no such thing as a dual core i5

Yes it can be done in the USA. However you will not have a DVD drive or Windows. So you will have to install Linux from a USB not from a DVD.

Edit "from a USB not from a DVD" lol

My build to test this used:
CPU + GPU: AMD A6 5400K 2 core APU
RAM: 4GB (2*2GB) DDR3-1600
Motherboard: Cheap A55 socket FM2
HDD: cheapest 250GB HDD (could have potentially also used a even cheaper 16GB USB thumb drive if the motherboard would support booting off of it however the system would have had little use beyond TF2 then)
Case + PSU: Cheapest case & PSU combo that had at least 200w on the 12V rail.

Lol, oops I fixed it. I meant to say "from a USB". Now I've made my edit to say that.

No budget PC from 2010 is going to be able to run newer games at anywhere near 60fps, even on lowest settings.

I'm going further, even a 1500$ rig from 2010 can't run a 2013 GPU intensive game anywhere near 60fps, even at lowest, because there is a gap in the technology used for GPU processing, why do you think console makers needed to upgrade their platform to the "next-gen" level ?

to the op :
Still it's possible to make a potable gaming rig that can run almost all games with mid range setting for 500-600$, if you build it yourself and forget about the screen, dvd reader, and KB/M

If you're going this way, take your time, looking at all latest cards released by AMD and Nvidia, latest chips released by AMD and Intel, to compare with lower-end and cheaper parts, search for reviews and tests over Google, they'll most likely orient your choice !

But make sure your case, your power supply and your motherboard allow you to upgrade your computer (should be the most expensive parts imo, all the rest can be replaced over time and the old stuff sold as second hand to compensate)
