$600 gaming desktop?
Edit: I'm at a $600 budget now. Information on linux (Ubuntu in particular) would be appreciated.
I'd also like to know what to avoid when picking parts. Please try to keep answers simple if possible :)

I'll probably just practice on my dell, then build a $600 desktop. $600 would get me a pretty good gaming desktop right? without stuff like the OS and a keyboard of course.

$600 is a completely different story. I just helped my friend build a $500 rig (OS, keyboard, monitor, etc not included) and he is able to run games like BF4 on medium to high settings.
$600 is a good budget for a casual build. That's a little more than I had when I built my first PC about 3 years ago. I have steadily upgraded it since 2010 and now I have a pretty nice PC. Don't be too worried about breaking something when you go to build the PC. Watch some videos on Youtube about how to assemble a PC and you will get the general idea as to what you need to do and in what order. Pretty much the only tool you need is a phillips head screwdriver (make sure the tip isn't magnetic)

Very happy to hear that... Going to be quite awhile before I can afford that though, probably not until later next year. Oh well :D

Thanks for all the replies guys! I think I'm about decided now :)

Well when you have the money, do your research. More cores does NOT equal better performance, core clock on a GPU means little, etc

Good to know, Not really tech savvy at all so I'm going to have to do a lot of research... but it'll be worth it.

No problem! Just remember to do research, just because something is more expensive or has more (Insert thing here) doesn't mean it's better

i wouldnt go back to the orig amd phenom cpu
those were bad when they were new

2.2ghz will be extremely slow
tf2 requires a very good cpu and decent gpu

Don't listen to this guy, that is a crap computer. Most integrated GPUs have more power than that 8500gt. Plus, he doesn't even specify the processor, so most likely it's trash. 3GB of RAM won't get you far either
Actually for games like HL2, CSS, DoDS, TF2; you could just build a AMD FM2/APU setup. Long as you still get a decent enough CPU, so that results is a decent enough onboard GPU.

> decent CPU cooler (like a CoolerMaster HyperTX3 or Hyper212, both of which are cheaply priced)

> 4GB RAM minimum
> 500GB HDD minimum
> 64bit OS (Win7 SP1 preferably)
> fairly priced PSU that still has good enough quality, such as Corsair CX500 (minimum)

And the AMD FM2 motherboard will still have a current gen PCI Express X16 slot so adding a much more powerful dedicated GPU down the road is easily an option.
