I am currently using Conexant SmartAudio HD soundcard and i wanted to know if that would support a triton 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound headset. i know literally nothing about soundcards.

A sound card should support any peripheral put into it as long as the sound card has the correct inputs for 5.1 or 7.1 audio, but you may want to do more research than just asking people on the forums. =P

That sound card/codec is poor quality.
I would just invest in a good USB headset, such as Triton 720+ multiplatform USB headset. At least you will be able to use it on consoles as well, and it will be much better then plugging in an analog headset into your sound card.

Is this a laptop or desktop?
If u just want a good quality headset that uses 3.5mm analog plugs and have a desktop, I would suggest a better sound card, such as ASUS Xonar or Creative Sound Blaster Z

Did u try it? What's stopping u?
Can't hurt to try.

Just know as far as headsets, if they are USB they are usually compatible with Consoles and PC/Mac. And USB ones have their own sound chip, so they do not run off your system sound card.

Where as analog ones, it needs to be a PC/Mac with the appropriate analog jacks on the sound card, if it's a 5.1 or 7.1 headset.

It should work, even if ur onboard sound only has 3 available plugs. Which is 5.1; what you have to do is open the Soundmax software and change it to 5.1 config. This will however turn the Line In and Mic In; into your Rear Speakers and Center Speaker output for when using a 5.1 setup.

What OS do u have installed?
I can point u to the sound drivers. Which u can simply reinstall if for some reason the Soundmax app is missing.

So did the system have control software panel for the Conexant HD Audio?

Also u can check some other settings via Control Panel > Sound > Manage Audio Devices
and check the Playback/Recording related settings. As there is usually some further customization options available there, based on the Audio Codec & Drivers.
