Maybe the 290 would be the economical option if you are going to water cool.
Ps if you're thinking of sli/xfire then the gtx660 is a cheaper option to experiment with to see if you like sli.
yeah i had though about sli'ing my 660 but its a lowmidrange card and im getting into watercooling soon. so i wanted to get a good gfx card and just watercool it all at once. so it looks like the 770 is slightly better than a 280x and i do tend to like nvidia so maybe that would be the best way to go.
