computer making a faint single beep every so often

Is it POST or is POST only on start up? Again the beep is very faint, almost sounds like it dies out at the end.

Motherboard make and model - came with computer Dell XPS 8300(?)
CPU - Intel i7-2600 3.4GHz
Video card - AMD Radeon HD 7970 (added to XPS system)
RAM - 8GB
Power Supply - Corsair X-series 650 (added to XPS system)

I'm no expert but could be one of three things in my experience. something isn't getting enough power, your RAM might not be seated quite right or something in there is running a bit hot.

POST is only on start up and if it starts normally then you don't have to worry.

If it beeps sometimes at random when it is on, it could be the BIOS temp alarm. Try clearing out dust /exchanging thermal paste or changing temperature alarm settings.

Current gen CPU's should not reach >70 C.

That sound is normally a momentary alert that a component, usually the CPU, has a fan that has dropped below a threshold RPM or temperature that has momentarily exceeded the warning temperature.

Most likely is due to CPU fan dropping below a certain RPM threshold (approx 1000rpm, depending on what the board is set to or recommends)

Or the CPU is overheating, in which the beeping starts, but then could go away once the CPU temp is lowered to an acceptable level.

Look in the BIOS upon system power-on/POST for anything regarding CPU Fan Settings. Most boards have a way to help regulate the CPU Fan RPMs via such a setting. If there is an option to do so, try turning this setting off, or put on AUTO, so the fan can run at it's recommend RPM settings.

Ah, maybe the fan has an obstruction its been awhile since I cleaned out the insides.

also make sure it isnt related to windows sounds or another program running

on some boards bios will make the pc speaker beep when its getting hot and shutting down

Well the dust wasn't at all bad when I opened it up and cleaned it. Maybe the fan is dying or not getting enough power somehow. I hope it is nothing serious though.

Alarms are always serious.

I remember a couple of years ago when I had no idea regarding computers. The temp alarm triggered and it was at 80 C. I thought Meh It can handle it and shut down the alarm. A few months later it just wouldn't start sometimes and I went to a repair shop and it turned out it reached 105 C when idle. The CPU plastic socket had melted fast to the MB-CPU etc etc etc. Complete MB and CPU replacement fixed it xD
