Abnormally hot ssd & no detection
If an nvme ssd is overheating and there's just no activity light from the drive activity, does it mean a dead drive

Does your BIOS/UEFI correctly detect this drive? Can't you boot into Windows at all?

Overheating is like 70 deg C or greater.

What is the temperature reading of yours? Take it out carefully, let it cool down and then re-seat it snugly back into the slot.

If you're absolutely sure you installed the nvm-e properly, possibly you should return/exchange it. These things should work out of the box.

search the internet (microsoft support website) for the app "diskpart". in case diskpart cannot find your ssd, it has to be defective.
normal use, as far as i know, is:

run "diskpart"
type in "list disk"

then the ssd must be found.

thats the way i do it.

I would see if you could exchange the drive.

If you have had it for awhile and exchange is not possible, they do sell NVMe heatsinks and fans. I ran across those at a specialty shop once. Surprised me that there was a market for those.

More like, I cant even get into bios (freezes upon showing bios f10) much less boot into an OS with the thing installed.

It would help if you provided the hardware you are using. What model is the SSD, motherboard? Which slot are you trying to install it in?

If the drive being in the system prevents the POST process, yes chances are that drive is dead. Remove the driv, then turn on the system and see. Can maybe try the drive on another machine or via USB caddy and see if can work properly otherwise
