Steam IS the internet
I mean, is the discussion of whether stuff should use xxx amount of memory, or whether stuff is efficient in year xxxx a subject worth having? Maybe.
Is 650 MB of memory use in 2023 for a broad "web app"/game client (let alone a Chromium one) on a 32 GB system insane? Not really. I don't even pay attention to what it uses so I just checked for reference and saw this...

About three quarters of a GB of RAM committed collectively, and less actively "in use"? A bit over half a GB by that count? Then I shrugged. Not a big deal. If I need that RAM, I either close Steam, or if I can't because it's needed to do what I'm wanting to do, then that means I'd right on the edge of needing more RAM anyway if some hundreds of MB is make or break.
Disclaimer that I basically don't use Steam outside the library and download tab. Even the community here is done through a browser instead. If you use it for more purposes, I would expect higher use as you use it. Such is normal.
Sure stuff on single digit GB might be feeling more of a squeeze (especially the lesser amounts like 4 GB or 6 GB) but as time moves on and norms grow, older norms become less capable. Always has been that way.
It is of course just an argument of ignorance because the way how processes and the OS handle memory pages is entirely different.
So because you wanted an example of a memory leak that YOU ASKED FOR that makes me and others uninformed and ignorant?
I dont know what you guys are talking about but NO ONE said that a Memory Leak was the cause of the OPs issue and NO ONE is being reported just for mentioning the word MEMORY LEAK, that isnt even something you can get in trouble for here.
I gave an example of a memory leak of the process using OVER 1GB because that is not NORMAL Behavior for Steam processes. I never said nor stated for a fact that the OPs problem was a memory leak. You just totally took my post out of context
Does that make sense now?
Actually try reading and understand the CONTEXT of a post.
We dont need seemingly New people to the forum causing problems for No Reason.
So?
Because programs need memory or they'll crash and you keep opening stuff.
It's time to start reading between the lines. What does this tell you? The process is necessary and has to be running.
I consider anti-virus software to be trash, bloatware, shovelware. It belongs nowhere near a gaming pc. I haven't installed ant-virus since 2001. Not sure why people use it considering how useless it is. It throws false positives, consumes resources, I mean the ant-virus is actually the virus here. It's just people like you have a false sense and don't see it that way, oh well.
I would actually be more concerned with the bitdefender being on my computer and consuming resources rather than the steam client. I would actually reformat my pc if I had anti-virus installed, just to get rid of it. I've done that before, got a new pc with ♥♥♥♥ on it and you reformat it to get rid of all the shovelware.
So why are you concerned? You see a problem with 600 megs when you have 32000 megs? And the more ram you have, the more windows will use. So getting more will only cause windows to allocate more. If you want programs using less ram then put less ram in your computer. That's how windows works. It's simply letting programs allocate more because it's there and why not? What good id your ram if it's just sitting there not being used?
Gotta love know-nothings who think having opinions equates to expertise, or knowing buzzwords equates to expertise. The ability to open your task manager doesn't equate to expertise either and arbitrarily deciding a program "should" use less RAM is based on what exactly?
How much RAM should Steam use? And how did you arrive at that figure? Show your work.
It's just a shame all these brave armchair experts never get around to showing the professionals how it's done. Much easier to lazily critique code you haven't even seen, or could even hope to write.
best bet is to restart steam every so often.
The last one rather
give it a few hours to a day or so, it will be broken again, like it has been doing since the UI update.
its been like 2 weeks since i updated to it
Been just fine ever since.
if you say so, guess you are one of the lucky ones.
