Insane memory usage Steam Client Webhelper
t's bad, now Steam client webhelper is using 600mb of my ram and there's no way to stop it. I tried hard stopping using task manager and then it pops up again. Also I changed it so Steam doesn't start when I start up my computer. Also under library I changed the settings to low memory usage. Still in idle, Steam is using 650mb of memory. I have plenty of memory (32 gb) and an i7 with GTX 1660s. The only time I ever had anything use that much memory is with the antivirus BitDefender.

Anyways, if anyone else is seeing this problem where Steam is hogging up tons of memory just idilng, post below.

You pro-Valve bootlickers keep saying that as if even 1GB isn't ridiculous for what Steam does...
1GB would be nice.. it started with 5GB this time and got worse with every restart..

yep no issues there.. just normal behavior. And certainly normal that I get it"fixed" when I break the Webhelper.exe on purpose..

The Steam app itself becomes very unresponsive because of it. Achievement pop ups etc are delayed several seconds but sure there is no problem at all.

its sad to see how people defend anything..

Or you could configure steam correctly and never see this behavior. It's been months now and I've never seen my steam client use more than 1 GB of ram at any point in time. It just doesn't do it.

like I showed in my video which you ignore after you claimed I didn't show everything? oh you didn't respond to it because you have no arguments. Now you claim the same thing again that some settings are turned on/off.
Maybe ask for a better script..

and who cares if you have no issues? other people have.
And the fact that it doesn't get fixed it any normal way like restarting or even reinstalling is certainly a red flag but of course people who defend anything and everything for no reason at all can't accept it.

you do know that Steam is for games?

I followed the instructions by that Kitty user posted previously in this thread and configured my steam client like they said and now my steam client is using 700~800 MB only all the time, even after hours of playing games. It sounds like your failure to get your steam client to behave this way is PEBKAC.

even 700-800 is too much

again, no arguments.

you also ignore the evidence I presented.

But I'm sure you can explain why WHILE starting Steam it takes 5Gb RAM and why no setting or fix (like restarting, ending webhelper taks etc) will actually change/help

There's nothing to argue about: You're doing it wrong.

I saw your videos and watched them. Like others have said: You didn't check all the settings. You left various settings turned on that you were advised to turn off. You're actually trying to cause steam to use lots of ram just so you have something to complain about, like other people in this forum thread.

agian, I showed all the settings. You guys not watching the 2nd video isn't my problem.

https://dai.ly/x8ryh8c as linked in post #198

And what I'm doing wrong when I start Steam by clicking on the Steam icon and while it signs me in it goes to 1,2,4,5 or more GB of RAM?

like I said, you guys have no arguments.

I just reviewed your video again. As I tried to tell you: You have many things turned on that causes steam to use excessive ram. Try the following:

Under Downloads: turn off shader pre-caching
Under Cloud: turn off screenshot management
Under In Game: turn off steam overlay, turn off restore previous browser tabs
Under Controller: turn off steam input for xbox controllers (unless you actually use this? If you don't use xbox controllers, turn it off)
Under Remote Play: Turn off remote play entirely.

Turn off Steam Overlay? This is a must have feature to have on.
This doesn't do anything extra with regards to being a RAM hog on any machine (over a dozen; modern day mid-range to high-end; both Win10 and 11)

Turning off Shader Pre-Cache download I agree with but this particular setting will definitely be user-by-user basis since most of the games I play never need this, but because I have all Steam Games installed, it is possible Steam might queue a download for a game's shader cache I definately do not need. Most games I play create their own shader cache and do not use this feature from Steam. So I've had that off ever since Valve added it to Steam.

Why keep Steam Overlay on?

Why keep Steam Overlay on?

So by this reply, you're telling us you have zero clue what that even does. Is that correct?

Yes it does. Having the overlay on controls if the broadcasting section is enabled. Disable overlay = disable broacasting. Also the "Overlay" is not an "overlay" anymore. With the current version of the steam client the "Overlay" spawns several steamwebhelper.exe processes when we start a game because the "Overlay" loads the web browser with a game when we load it. Turning off the steam overlay switches off both the entire broadcasting sub-section and disables the web browser processes that get loaded along side the overlay when we launch games, which reduces the overall steam ram usage 'footprint'.

If people want ram usage to be low then switch off everything not needed to launch games and the ram usage will be low. If they don't want to do that then those same people should also not complain about high ram usage if they refuse to configure the settings in steam towards lower ram usage.

There is not 1 single steam game that exists that actually "NEEDS" shader precaching. It is not a requirement by any program, app, or game anywhere on Steam. The "Shader pre-caching" is ONLY there to help our games start up faster. That's it's only function.

Shader pre-caching is primarily for people with slower computers or (gods forbid!) anyone that is actually still using a mechanical hard drive for their games or for their only storage in their computer.

Anyone that has their steam install location on any form of SSD does not need shader pre-caching enabled.

Steam Overlay is not Steam Broadcasting. Those are two different things and if you don't want to broadcast, turn that off. Very simple.

If you disable Steam Overlay you will not have any game tracking or achievements. It's required to stay on for those purposes. Also screenshot capture and such.

By turning Steam Overlay off all I ever gain is approx 50-100MB of RAM at most at any given time. Only because of GameOverlayUI.exe + few more instances of Steam Webhelper. It's extremely minimal. But turning it off is like "Well well, WTF am I even on Steam for to begin with then" kind of an issue.

If you want to save RAM, turn off the auto sign-on to Steam Friends.
Do you even chat with friends or play with them?
Plus you realize you can use Steam Chat Mobile App to talk to them and not tie up more RAM on your gaming PC for that, and also stop all the annoying popups and sounds while trying to play a game.

I never use the overlay so it was one of the first things that got turned off while trying to tame Steam’s RAM consumption.

Good to know it’s every bit as useless as I thought it was.
