check inside the graphics card, does it havee explosive symbols on it like these.

if not then you will be fine, if its £7 then its more than likely that its faulty.

sorry that was my weak attempt at humour, gpus dont explode, and your 650watt won't either, im running my gtx 690, and fx8350 both fairly overclocked on a 650w for several months now and no problems

ok i plugged it into one of my older useless computers and power goes through the gpu and the fan runs at full throttle. a red light comes on but i am pretty sure that is because there is no power injection pens connecting into the gpu. I also looked it up and one red light means the power is setup incorrectly. which is true i could not set the power up correctly because the old psu has no 6 prong power connectors. so this leads me to the gpu works.

You should never run a GPU without the right amount and the correct type of power connecters. The 5970 is a very powerful GPU and will require a good quality power supply. I'm not sure what the power requirements are but be sure to look them up before plugging it in to your power supply to make sure you have enough power

it req a 650 watt psu and i put it into a 250 watt... a red light came on on the gpu indicataing that a critical power issue is happening. BUT THE FAN SPINS ON THE GPU !!!! :)
Meaning it is alive XD !

so if the fan spins does that mean it isn't fried?

It wont cause any issues if it doesnt work to your computer. at worst it will just not work. A 650 watt psu will power it fine

@ Holland swap the 650w into the 250w tower and see what happens if you don't want to risk your main tower, really no way to tell unless you fire it up.

Main thing would to be sure you are using the correct PCI-E connectors, those being a 6pin and an 8pin.

Dont confuse a 12v ATX 8pin for a PCI-E 8pin, that could cause problems.

Okay well goto the AMD site and download em.

Make sure you uninstall EVERYTHING related to nVidia first to avoid possible conflicts.

It's a good idea to get a side intake fan on it too those coolers aren't that good.

Yup uninstall NVidia, boot into safe mode clean NVidia with Driversweeper, reboot and install your amd drivers.

Ok i got it to work but i am having a problem with skyrim. I load the game and it is scratching like giant shards everywhere. someplaces it is worse but others it doesnt even happen... I am still getting 70+ fps though. anyone know a fix? this isn't happening for any of my other games either?? So it must be somthing with skyrim AND PLEASE I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO THE NVIDIA GTX 550 TI !!!!!!!!!!!!! I only get 30 fps on high with that graphics card ;( But again for $7 it produces pretty dang good graphics. :)

Perhaps you searched for 5970 drivers which will give an older version, just use the latest available, they're all still compatible with 5000 series cards.

ok it does it for every game could it posibly be the gpu? And i can not find a driver XD i had windows automaticly get it for me
