Is a AMD FX -4130 3.8Ghz Processor any good for gaming?
I'm building a budget PC for my nephew. I typically stick with Intel myself. But again being a budget PC I went to keep the cost low. This processor is reasonably priced at $89. Will it run most games even AAA's at low to medium settings? And do you think it will be usable for at least two years? If there's any better processes for about $100 range I would love to hear. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think the Fx 6300 3.5Ghz is a good option. Depending on where you are, I think you can get it for something like $120
I use a Intel Pentium G3220 and it only cost £55, about 70 - 80 USD.

Pair it with a half decent graphics card and it's pretty nippy.
Some good ideas. I wanted to put more into the GPU instead of the CPU. I want to upgrade my graphics card and perhaps give him mine. A GTX 660 TI.
What's total budget? I might have some helpful saved builds here:

I would personally recommend the FX 6300 cause you can get it for $110-$120 and it's got the 2 extra cores and newer architecture.

The FX 4130 is fine and will run stuff good though.
I'm trying to keep the build under $600. I'm not putting an optical disk drive in. I have an old 500 GB hard drive I'm going to cannibalize. I may or may not be able to give him my GPU. So the CPU and GPU will be the main cost.

Hey thanks for the tip Rove. That's a really good site. I think it will help me a lot. This will be my first build really. I ordered my PC from a computer company. I wish I would've known how easy it is to build a PC before I did. Would've saved a lot of money.

The other CPU you should look at is the Athlon II X4 760K. It's based on the slightly updated version of the same architecture as the FX-4130, has a similar clock speed, is slightly cheaper and decent FM2/FM2+ motherboards should be cheaper for it relative to the AM3+ FX boards. The only difference is the lack of level 3 cache, which has not really be demonstrated to be that useful in gaming anyway - access to GPU memory is far more important as that is more likely to be the bottleneck.
Not good, because bad processor for gaming, as for me intel core i3 or i5 would be better.
for $600 usd, you can do a decent i3 build or low end i5

intel haswell pentium g will match/beat amd quads
i3 4130 will match amd 6300
haswell i5 will match/beat amd 8000+

if near a microcenter

i5 3570k combos start at $205+tax
get it with a z77 board for $280+tax (if you want to overclock)

If it is your current processor then yes it will be perfectly fine. Yes i5s are better but i've been running a FX 4170 for a while now and I've never had any issues with it gaming or in regular computing tasks. Now if you are planning on buying a new computer and were thinking of the 4130 I'd reccommend getting an i5 (if you have the money) or an FM2+ processor like a A10 or Athlon II X4 if you want to go AMD for price consierations.
An A10 6XXX processor gets around the same performace (or better) than the FX 4XXX line up but the FX line of processors (AM3+ socket) is being phased out in the near future so choosing a processor on the FM2+ socket makes more sense for future considerations
am3+ is being phased out because amd will no longer make desktop cpus
they are aiming for the mobile and console markets
