Problems with new 660 Ti
(THE OLD TITLE OF THIS THREAD WAS: "Getting crappy video performance on my new rig, every program randomly crashes")

So, I'm constantly getting this problem where my computer completely freezes up , it's like I don't even have a video card. Each letter in this thread I'm typing now takes 3 seconds to appear on the screen. This problem started a few days ago with the Aero theme getting disabled and bad performance while watching videos, now my computer freezes up every five seconds.

Specs:

FX-6300 3.5 GHz
8 GB Kingston HyperX Genesis RAM (2x4 GB)
Asrock 970 Pro3 R 2.0
Asus DirectCUII GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Corsair CX500 80+ Bronze certified

I'll look for one tomorrow. However why would the problem start after tabbing out of a DX11 game? Something with the video card or motherboard's boot system is very clearly wrong.

I am barely an advanced novice regarding pc hardware, but I do remember earlier FX chip/mobo's (Bulldozer series?) had many issues that required a BIOS update. I thought the later chips and mobo's were okay (like yours), but it never hurts to check.

I am sorry to see that you haven't been able to resolve this yet (Jan. 6th. op), it must be terribly frustrating.
Yeah. The problem started when I tabbed out of Batman: Arkham Origins and shut down the computer. The next time I booted it up it was pretty much unusable with all programs randomly crashing and video card stopping to respond during simple 2D tasks.

Was your card OC'ed at all, and if it was, have you tried restoring default parameters?

So you tabbed-out of (BM Origins) and shut off your pc wtihout closing the game and Steam first (not that it should matter)? Have you tried doing a ***clean install*** of your nVIDIA drivers?

I would do a complete uninstall of the drivers (maybe in safe mode), then use a driver sweeper/CCleaner combo to clean up any registry errors, and then your drivers should perform a clean install automatically when you reinstall your drivers.

Using driver sweeper in safe mode anymore shouldn't be necessary for most users, but your case is extreme. It doesn't sound like a mere coincidence (tabbing out of BM Origins). How was your pc performing before you tabbed out of Batman and shut down?

What os are you running? Have you tried reinstalling Windows (System Restore? or refreshing Windows - W8/8.1)? If that doesn't work you may have to consider a hardware failure.
Card running at default clocks. Tried clean-installing drivers numerous times. I've reinstalled Windows and drivers and ran CCleaner and Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. My PC performed just fine before I tabbed out of the game and shut down the computer. I was able to run it on max settings in 1280x1024 at decent framerates. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and I have tried formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows.

That's what I get for not reading all of the posts in this thread - my bad.

I am plumb out of ideas besides the BIOS update, or even going into your current BIOS and restoring defaults (even if you have never made any changes?)

Hope you get it sorted HANNES, and post back if you get it solved. It would be very interesting to know what happened.

:)
There doesn't seem to be a "restore defaults" button in the BIOS, but I'll look for an update.
I've downloaded a BIOS update from Asrock's website (came in a .zip file) but I have no idea how to install it. It said something about Instant Flash but the installation manual was full of grammar mistakes and didn't make any sense. How do I install this update?

EDIT: I got this particular 660 Ti for 190 bucks, it seems that either the store was really stupid to sell it for that cheap or then I was given a defective one.

Which manufacturer is that 660ti from HANNES?

As far as updating the BIOS, normally you would either unzip the file to a folder that the BIOS updater can find (when you update from the BIOS), or you unzip it onto a flash drive and then do it that way.

Different mobo's have different BIOS updaters, and I am just too inexperienced to walk you through something like that without actually being at your pc. Perhaps Google your mobo and then bios update instructions? (If you haven't done so already).

Of course it could just be your card. Do you have another card that you could throw in your pc to see if it has the same issues?

It is the Asus DirectCU II GeForce GTX 660 Ti. My old video card is a GeForce 405, basically a renamed, overclocked GT 210 with a fan.
Well, I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaHkkz_i74o
Read the video description, doing a reboot fixes the problem, same thing with my card. I'll open up the computer tomorrow and try putting the card in the second PCI-E slot.
Well about 3 weeks ago things were a lot worse as it would never boot properly, but after doing some tinkering in the BIOS I managed to get it to work after a reboot.
Move over, Reddit users, there's a new hardcore troll in town, the Asus GTX 660 Ti.

Placing the video card in the second PCI-E slot didn't help. Clean-installed drivers, didn't help. Time to move on to the last idea I have in my mind: Playing Batman: Arkham Origins, tabbing out of the game and shutting down the computer.
Didn't work. Literally out of ideas.
Sorry have you tried running with the old GPU/GPU?? I just re read the whole thread pretty much. If you have that gt405 put that in,try and watch some videos I understand it will barely game, if it works its hardware and its either your GPU or your PSU is having problems.

I suspect the PSU but it could be either I would say.

As to how your fault started it may mean nothing at all. I took my card out to clean it once put it back in fired up and my frame rate in games had become unplayable. I figured I broke something but it turns out via a process of elimination my graphic drivers had just decided to go bad at that exact time.

The CX 500 is a good BUDGET PSU not the same as a good PSU otherwise why do Corsair have TX,HX,AX and the newer ones? One of those second rate capacitors may have chosen that moment to get flaky. And even a good PSU can be faulty.

In summary take the card and PSU back to the shop ask them to test them. If they say they are ok RMA with manufacturer.

If anyone knows better then me or has any other ideas or thinks I'm wrong. Please feel free.....:)
Allright, time to blow off the dust of this thread. I've done the BIOS update, gonna see if the problem persists.

aaaaaaaaaaand the problem is back.

I used Asrock Extreme Tuner for temps when I got the false temps, AMD Overdrive and Core Temp show them at 25 degrees while Asrock claims I'm running at 43. I'll try that when I reboot.

The ASRock program should actually be correct.

Many 3rd party apps are still not able to correctly read/display CPU temps when using FX CPUs for some reason, CoreTemp, Speccy. When they are showing an FX CPU's idle temp of around 15-25*C, that is WRONG. Unless your ambient room temp is really that cold, there is no way the CPU is gonna be idle or low-loads in the OS session and still run below 28*C or so on air, especially a stock cooler.

I have built and sold many FX series setups and I own a few. BIOS as well as the app made from the board maker would show around 30*C for CPU, while CoreTemp, HWMonitor, Speccy would show like 12-18*C... haha no way that can be correct, sorry.

Get better airflow in your case. If it does not have good amount of fan placements, get a better case & fans. At the very least, get a better CPU heatsink+fan. Like a CM Hyper TX3 or Hyper 212.

If you have Windows7, make sure u install the Microsoft Hotfixes for AMD FX CPUs.

However if u have Win8/8.1 the fixes are already included in those OS.

Disable C1E and AMD Cool&Quiet in BIOS to stop the fluctuation of CPU clocks.

I actually bought a Cooler Master Blizzard T2 cooler last week and tied up some of the cables in the case. Decreased my temps by about 2 degrees but the new cooler is much quieter while gaming.

EDIT: According to AsRock my temps are now at 58 degrees, seems like either the thermal paste went bad or a software problem.

core temp often needs an offset
use the mobo utility to see the temp, then adjust the offset core temp so it shows the same

the t2 is a weak air cooler
it will be quieter but will not cool as good as the stock cooler
tx3 is fine for a 100w cpu if you dont plan on overclocking
or 212evo or t4 if you want to overclock

AsRock claims I run at 76 C when playing Black Mesa... I find it strange that the overheat protection hasn't engaged yet.
