Friend's 460W psu borderline ok for a hd 6870?
Hello there!

My friend is about to get himself a used hd 6870 for his HP desktop, my concern is that the bad quality psu HP put in that computer might cause problem with this new gpu.

His system specs:
FX-6120
Radeon HD 7450
8 GB RAM
2 TB HDD

for some details: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03364037#N90

Should we just outright change the psu or should this borderline pass?

Thanks! :house:

"500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended"

I doubt his PSU can handle it. The PSU, the card or both would probably have an early death if he tries. Hewlett Packard use the cheapest PSUs they can stick in their PCs.

I did put in my hd 7850 and it did work well though. I do understands it's borderline, even if manufacturers tend to put a higher requirement in case

if its an oem pc, upgrade the power supply when upgrading the gpu

6780 is a 150w gpu

a quality 450w psu will be fine
if its oem 500w, get something better first

cx430 or antec, corsair, seasonic, xfx 450+w would be better

cx430 is currently $44 shipped, $24ar

I'd say for that rig, no.

If I passed him my very old 460W antec psu, antec being a reknowned brand of quality, would it work then?

Because his system did run my 7850 rather well with little problem.

Thanks for the input btw

An Antec 460w PSU might work, but I would be careful with a 460w PSU. My original 460w PSU in my HP desktop was running my GTX 660 fine, but it started having issues in which my PC would not shut down completely. Not taking any chances, I upgraded to a Corsair CX600M PSU and all is well again.

As an electronics tech I can tell you that, even if your rig manages to function with an underpowered PSU, you will be risking possible damage to the various componants in your PC. An underpowered PSU may not regulate the various voltages adequately causing problems for, or damage to, other componants. If it does fail severe voltage spikes or surges may result, any of which could easily damage the other componants in the PC. Unless you are prepared to replace more than just the PSU to keep this PC running I highly recommend you replace the PSU with a decent brand name PSU with an adequate power rating. Typically, if you can afford it, I would recommend one rated at least 10 to 20 % higher than needed to allow for future expansion or use in a newer system. Also make certain that any power supply you purchase has only one 12 v rail. For a while many manufacturer's boasted about multiple 12 v rails as if that was a beneficial feature. For the majority of systems and users it is NOT as it is too easy to hook too many componants to just one rail and overload that even though you have not exceeded the combined PSU rating.
