is my graphics card decent? (Radeon 8650G)
Hey guys!
ive been wrestling with the idea of joining some kind of PC forum just to ask this question, but maybe you guys can help me out.

Im thinking about buying an HP Envy 15-j007cl. (SPECS SEEN HERE: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03942501&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5450026)
I was wondering if the graphics card in there (AMD Radeon 8650) is a decent card that should get me through my mostly-steam-sale library of games? i play a lot of GTA IV, Resident Evil 6, Mortal kombat 9, and so on.

ALSO, what does it mean to have a card witth 4204MB in "total graphics memory"? on mid/low settings, is this a worthwhile card to have?

if your looking at a new notebook
look for an i5qm or i7qm with a gtx card

amd is about 5 years behind intel at this point

if its using the apu (xxxxg gpu) having 1 dimm will cut its performance in half

i tried the same 2 years ago, but the notebook ($900) always got incredibly hot and laggy even while using a cooling pad.
dont know about current models though

Don't expect it to be a capable gaming machine it's not. There will be lots of games it can play cause there are lots of old or low requirement games. However this hardware is significantly worse than a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and it's only feature better than them is to be a PC which means more software and multiple OS choices.

For what I'm assuming is about the same price (I saw that Notebook listed for $650 at Sam's Club) you can get a pretty capable gaming desktop complete with Windows 8.1, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and Speakers. This desktop should be fair competition for the PS4 or XB1 in performance plus it also has overclocking, a bigger HDD, is upgradeable in every aspect (something consoles lack) and has the "I'm a PC" advantage.

As you can see the actual computer tower is about the same price as one of the new consoles and about the same technical performance in terms of what it can run.

If you want that laptop for "on the go" fine but expect it to be similar to a handheld console vs a living room console. Yes you can play games, no they won't be the same quality or catalogue though of course on the desktop you can play all the games the notebook could play as well as all the better ones.

What I can say that is positive about that laptop graphics and performance is that while it is significantly below the level of a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One it is at least better than a Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. This means you should be able to play a great deal of PC games available also on those consoles on your laptop BUT you will probably have to use lower settings & resolutions because PC quality scales up much higher than console in terms of hardware. There may also be some PC games that also exist on PS3 and XB 360 that you can't play on PC simply because they did not include console levels of quality for PC or because they are not compatible with notebook integrated graphics which are generally not the graphics cards targeted for gaming optimizations by programmers.

I can't promise you can play anyhting on this machine. It's not built to be a gaming machine.

On the desktop I showed you I know that can play stuff.

Look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_8000_Series
You can find your Graphics Card here near the bottom of the page and see that it has 409~ GFLOPS of processing power and various other stats. Make sure you find the one ending in G as there may be other 8650's which are not the G (ultra-mobile) series and have different stats.

If this card and the CPU and so forth are better than the minimum system requirements for the game in question then you can probably play it unless there is a compatibility issue.
