R9 290x vs GTX 780Ti
What do you guys think, which GPU performs better (in gaming) and what are the pros and cons of each one?

I seriously wouldn't even think about 4K Ultra HD just yet.
While these newer high end GPUs can technically do that, you not going to be gaming at that res on any single GPU that is out currently. You'd need 2 or 3 780-Ti in SLI to do that.

When in doubt, go nVidia.

780 Ti is more powerful.

AMD 7990 is what comes close in terms of performance (but it's dual GPU setup in one card).

Also 780 Ti has lower TDP, so it runs cooler & quiter.

It may be more powerful in theory, but do games run better on it? BF4 is optimized for amd, and most next gen games will be...

This is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I hate it when someone says a game is more opitimized for amd or nvidia. Dude the next gen consoles are weak and my 780 kills BF4. So it is a moot point if something is optimized or not when these GPUs will destroy the game.

IMHO, the 290x is poorly built, way too loud, and throttles down because it gets too hot. Price may be more for Nvidia but you get way more features, and a much nicer, quieter, cooler, and better built product. Sorry 290x, but its 780 or 780ti all the way.

I would wait until January for the properly cooled 290/290X. Here's what to expect: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_radeon_r9_290x_directcuii_oc_review,1.html

780ti offers more raw performance. 290x is less expensive and offers less performance. What peeves me most is when people say that AMD's coolers aren't adequate and hence the 90+ Celcius temperatures. The engineers designed the thing to run at 90+ degrees! People just don't read these days.

R9 290X runs very hot, but not because of AMD drivers. Simply because it is using the reference design cooler, which is just not enough for a 290 series/

The cooler is exactly the same as all the other reference AMD cards, which if you look at the 7970, keeps it below 80 C. Why? Because it's not designed for 90+ C but the 290 is. (I don't hold sides either, I use Nvidia).

That is not true. Sometime overclocking 7970 will hit over 90+C.

The only advantage of AMD cards is they mine bitcoin much better than NVidia cards for the same price. If that doesn't interest you, probably stick to NVidia.

I've always stuck with nVidia and always will even in this case. As soon as I stop spending all my money I will be straight onto a gtx780Ti. Forget about the R290x.

780ti - Faster, quieter, less power draw, cooler, much better overclocker

Both of those benchmarks are outdated. They were released before the 4K performance boost drivers from Nvidia which put the 780ti ahead of the 290x in most games and on par with others. Either way it means nothing since people without 4K monitors are not concerned with this. By the time 4K monitors are affordable for the majority both of these cards will be outdated.

The only pro a 290x has over the 780ti is price. But I'd take faster performance, lower power draw, and lower temperatures over a $100 price difference.

I also dislike AMD's idea of what a reference cooler should be. They think it should be the bare minimum while Nvidia actually makes decent reference coolers. My 780ti stays at around 70 C during high end gaming.

If you can spare the extra $100 go for the 780ti.

If you go for Nvidia, just buy a regular 780 since you can overclock it to get close to Ti stock performance. IMO, the Ti doesn't justify another $100-$200 for 8-15 fps (1080p gaming for AAA titles). Nvidia's Maxwell is not too far away, that is if you have the patience to wait.

The AIB/non-reference 290(X) cards should be here soon. We'll have to wait for reviews of those cards....

NVIDIA because a lot of games have nvidia pysix and also the new G sync techology with G sync enabled monitors no more skiping frames and you can record your games and also live stream them to that twitch thing.

Well AMD's new cards are more expensive then they were when they were released, the 290x its hot and loud but if you buy an aftermarket cooler you should be fine (as long as you don't care about voiding your warranty) but non-reference design 290x's are coming out, infact I think there are some out and they are not much more expensive (depends on where you live though). 290x competes well with the 780ti only coming behind a few FPS and in some cases even beating tt (It should definatly beat in a game using Mantle but nobody knows how big of a FPS improvement that will bring). For the most part a 780ti is faster, but if you can find a non-reference design 290x I think thats a better deal unless you want a Nvidia card for Nvidia features and stuff you can't get on a AMD card. Hell forget both and get a non-reference 290 when you can, not far behind the 290x and alot cheaper and can overclock to be just as good. Maybe you should skip all them and wait for Nvidias Maxwell cards coming next year.

PhysX is proprietary and only a couple of AAA titles use it. There is a work around and you can enable hydrid physx (use an AMD GPU and physx is driven by a separate NV card).

G-sync is nice and all but it is still in its infancy. The only monitor that uses the tech is the Asus VG248QE and not many people like it due to the backlight flickering (I would rather get the BenQ XL2420TE since it's flicker-free/backlight does not use PMW controller).
