While these newer high end GPUs can technically do that, you not going to be gaming at that res on any single GPU that is out currently. You'd need 2 or 3 780-Ti in SLI to do that.
This is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I hate it when someone says a game is more opitimized for amd or nvidia. Dude the next gen consoles are weak and my 780 kills BF4. So it is a moot point if something is optimized or not when these GPUs will destroy the game.
IMHO, the 290x is poorly built, way too loud, and throttles down because it gets too hot. Price may be more for Nvidia but you get way more features, and a much nicer, quieter, cooler, and better built product. Sorry 290x, but its 780 or 780ti all the way.
The cooler is exactly the same as all the other reference AMD cards, which if you look at the 7970, keeps it below 80 C. Why? Because it's not designed for 90+ C but the 290 is. (I don't hold sides either, I use Nvidia).
That is not true. Sometime overclocking 7970 will hit over 90+C.
Truer words have never been spoken,
Both of those benchmarks are outdated. They were released before the 4K performance boost drivers from Nvidia which put the 780ti ahead of the 290x in most games and on par with others. Either way it means nothing since people without 4K monitors are not concerned with this. By the time 4K monitors are affordable for the majority both of these cards will be outdated.
The only pro a 290x has over the 780ti is price. But I'd take faster performance, lower power draw, and lower temperatures over a $100 price difference.
I also dislike AMD's idea of what a reference cooler should be. They think it should be the bare minimum while Nvidia actually makes decent reference coolers. My 780ti stays at around 70 C during high end gaming.
If you can spare the extra $100 go for the 780ti.
The AIB/non-reference 290(X) cards should be here soon. We'll have to wait for reviews of those cards....
PhysX is proprietary and only a couple of AAA titles use it. There is a work around and you can enable hydrid physx (use an AMD GPU and physx is driven by a separate NV card).
G-sync is nice and all but it is still in its infancy. The only monitor that uses the tech is the Asus VG248QE and not many people like it due to the backlight flickering (I would rather get the BenQ XL2420TE since it's flicker-free/backlight does not use PMW controller).
