So what I would say, nearly any cooling pad would do, just to keep it elevated. My cooling pad hasnt worked for a year, but I still keep my laptop on it.
Now if your laptop is overheating, possibly due to not being worth the money(looking at you alienware) or just has ridiculous components in it(Sager laptop with desktop processors at over 4Ghz) then maybe getting a heavy duty one would be woth it.
As far as AMD versus Intel in a laptop. The AMD CPUs aren't too bad, but u just do not see them much anymore and when u do, that usually means it is coupled by a Radeon GPU.
Overall the mobile version of parts from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA are pretty much all made to be able to run @ a max temp of around 105*C so I wouldn't worry too much. If you are buying a gaming laptop or are just a gamer in general, then u should know to monitor your temps and such. And that anything above 80-85*C or higher is bad news.
Never had any cooling issues or need for a pad, ever after years of gaming use.
However, sometimes u might need to replace the internal fan(s). PITA but if u don't mind taking them apart, then it really isn't an issue. I just wish the fans lasted longer, but often times, they usually do not.
But yea if u buy good laptops, there shouldn't be that need to buy extra things like cooling pads. But if u live in areas where it is really hot, then u will probably still need extra external cooling, regardless of your laptop design.
