Are the RTX 5080 and 5090 safe to use?

Do you keep a fire extinguisher handy when you use either of these?

I've been reading that these two might melt like expensive ice creams if you don't plug the cable in properly.

not plugging the cable in all of the way properly is the cause of the problems

as long as its plugged in all the way, and not twisted or bent near the plug its fine
extra stress on the plug can unseat it and cause problems
no danger of fire, just melted connectors and damaged pc components

but its very hard for the psu to tell the difference between a 600w load and dead short at 12v
12v x 50a = 600w
12v / 50a = 0.25ohm
the psu wires resistance is often more than that

Considering these GPUs still have problems with these cables and they still don't ship with a proper monitoring of the resistance or voltage or even the tempeture of the cable. Some high end models have such mechanisms, but they won't shut down your system. At least it will inform you that something is wrong.

That is the worrisome part. Does AMD have this problem? Googled but can't find any.

thats because amd is still using the pci-e 6+2, which have been proven to work for the last 15+ years with almost no issues

there is a reason they still use those connectors for mobo 20+4 atx and eps 4+4 connectors


nvidia should have learned their lesson the first time, but they still want to use the connectors that can easily be unseated
even if they just changed the 'clip' to a latch, that locked it in place, would nearly solve all of its problems

In simple words, if you want to drag 60A, you need 60A connector. If you use 6x10A connector you need to make sure (!) that the current ditribution will be even, Nvidia didn't do it and cables will melt. It's only matter of time, nothing that any user can do about it.

thats design flaw

there are many much better connectors they should have used
the xt120 with 2 power +4 accessory wires is rated for 120a (60a each)

The fact that these connectors are rated for ~30 “mating cycles” doesnt help.

People keep seeing all the posts about melting cables and start panicking and checking their own cables constantly which quickly wears them out which then increases the risk of it melting…

I was wondering how a connector could even be loose.
When I do routine cleaning of the desktop and remove the GPU it takes a bit of effort just to remove the connector. Once they snap in they are pretty tight.
Sounds like the new ones are not designed as good.

JayzTwoCents did 100 cycle test. The only part that got worn out is the plastic latch.

There have been reports of melted connectors and fire.

Yet another reminder that NVIDIA sees customers as being lower than dirt.

I touched my GOU power cable once in 8 years to move the GPU from x8 to x16 because I no longer care that the GPU barely touches the CPU heatsink by 1mm.

I was more surprised at the lack of dust accumulation on the GPU fans all these years and my 1-year-old Noctua Industrial style IP54 exhaust fan has zero dust on it.

Maybe the issue (of melting cables) could be that people are mixing and matching power cables, which you should never do even for the same brand (after that whole EVGA reverse polarity debacle one needs to remain vigilant).
