Should i regret upgrading from a 3080-5080?
I ordered a new pc because mine is having a hardware issue, probably with the motherboard and so bluescreens fairly frequently, but i dont feel like troubleshooting it more than i already have nor am i particularly interested in trying to manually replace parts.
Besides a general upgrade to my system, while i find the 3080 still quite capable graphics wise its 10gb of vram i think is starting to show its limits where i couldnt run one of the final fantasy games because it needed 12 to run so cutsceenes would freeze the whole pc. Plus on highest settings, im starting to see fps limitations of 60 or just under. Which im not an fps snob but i dont want to be hitting 40 in the future (my moniter currently is only a 60hz refresh rate so ive been content with 60 for years) and I want to make sure i have plenty of power to deal with newer gpu heavier games like the upcoming Inzoi.
I chose the 5080 instead of the 24 gig 5090 simply because the 5090 is like a grand more and a whole new pc build was already several thousands.

But after reading different reviews and discussions im getting mixed reviews on whether ill get noticeable improvements that make it feel worth spending so much.
Compared to a 10 gig 3080 (as well as i am also getting a 144hz 4k moniter too) will a 16 gig 5080 really feel like a suffieicnt upgrade to keep up with the next 4 or 5 years of games or did i waste money and should have just bit the bullet and gotten a 5090?

Im not sure if i should feel regret for my card decision. I am aware 4080 people dont see much of a jump but i had assumed a 3080-5080 would be significant.

Yes. If I were you, I'd spiral into alcoholism to free me of my guilt.

if you have the money. then yes. 6gb larger vram. future proof. better performance - should be more cuda cores.

what is the benefit of cuda cores?

If you can afford it, why feel bad, you should get a decent performance increase, though, high refresh 4k is probably not going to happen without relying heavily on dlss and potentially frame gen, which is not a bad thijng, but you should be aware of it.

The 4090 was the first truly 4k capable gpu in my eyes and it still needs dlss (so no longer native 4k) to push to 100+ fps in many titles, and it's more powerful than the 5080.

As long as you haven't paid an insane scalped price for the card, be happy and ignore the vocal minority screaching, the 5080 is the best card you can buy at its price point (MSRP - ish) and as you said, notably cheaper than a 5090 or a second hand 4090.
I upgraded from a 3080 to a 4080 and didn’t regret it for a second.

Idk the purpose of this post. You've spent your money and wanted a buyer's remorse out of your purchase?

Just enjoy your card and play some games, dude

"but generally speaking (within a generation), more CUDA cores will equate more raw compute power from the GPU. "

It definitely is a significant jump in regards to performance but will 16gb of vram suffice for the next gen? I already see limitations with my 4080s whenever I enable everything. That's why I'm waiting for the 5080s with 3gb gddr7 modules to release later this year to replace my 4080s

RTX 5080 can easily be double the performance of a 3080 even without frame generation in some cases, it's about equivalent to a 4090 (when it's not missing things like ROPs) which was also capable of being double the performance of a 3080

Not without mfg, it's about 5000 cuda cores down on the 4090.

It’s a fantastic upgrade. 10GB is not enough for new Final Fantasy games or high quality textures packs in Monster Hunter or Space Marine 2. 10GB would steadily feel worse and worse with new games in the next 2-4 years. You can make 10GB enough but you would need to compromise on textures what is usually the most painful downgrade to avoid/reduce stutters.
2 Generation gap, dont see why not.
Assuming you dont get a 5080 with a ROP issue

I'm still waiting for the stocks to fill up.

What I also found weird is that the prices for RTX 5080 in Sweden on Nvidia home page dropped by like 2000 SEK or roughly $200. Neat. Wish they could stock them though.

You certainly will regret the 5080 later if you don't get a 1440p monitor. However pair it with a good 1440p OLED monitor and you'll be in heaven. This is the necessary compromise you need to make for not buying a 4090/5090.

Given how good OLED monitors are, this is a minor compromise.
