What game(s) have you upgraded your system for?
I upgraded for Half-Life 2 back in the day, and then Crysis. After that, I was on a constant upgrade cycle.:steamhappy:

Hmm.

I built a new PC in 2020 (replacing the 2011 build), likely for Cyberpunk.

I'd already gotten a new GPU in 2019 for The Division 2 (along with the part where my 2015 GPU was getting a bit old). Luckily I hit a convenient AMD sale that gave me a free copy of Div 2, so the RX570/8GB effectively only cost $125. :)

Not sure when exactly I got my 2015 GPU (R9 270x), but the 'big' game I got that year was Fallout 4. So that might have been part of the inspiration.

The 2023 GPU upgrade (RX 6650xt) might have been for/excused by Starfield.

I've never upgraded a CPU within a system, just built a new one. My 2011 system's i5 2400 was starting to get a bit long in the tooth 9 years later.

(before the 2011 PC, I'd been playing games for the previous gen on an iMac dual-booting into WinXP. That was back when Apple was still putting at least reasonable GPUs in their lower-mid systems. Radeon HD 2400xt?)
I have upgraded from rtx 3090 to rtx 4090 just to see path tracinn & ray reconstruction at playable framerates with my own eyes. Honestly I had the 4090 for a long time now, and haven't really played many games on it besides running some benchmarks. I mostly play games on the Ps5 Pro nowdays. Before that I religiously upgrated to the top end GPU every time a new one came out whether I needed it or not. when SLi was a thing I would buy 3 of the top end gpus for tri-sli. I think I was always more into the testing benchmarking and overclocking the systems then playing games. or I played games to watch the FPS and test all the settings.
None, really. There will never be a game that will make me spend more money than its price tag.
I just upgraded for the new DOOM coming out in May  :P6:
The moment i realized that i cant be using low end anymore was for elder scrolls oblivion and, x3 terran conflicts, the last battle was so big that my screen froze for every 5 sec, then i became addicted fomo , but i stopped buying high end at 780 gtx, lost interest to gaming, back again 1080 era gtx , now i buy the cheapest performance i can get,, free from shackles

For most people, it's usually more of a case that <Game X> is the first one they want of a new era of higher system requirements. So they'll need the new hardware for plenty of games, they just say that the first one was the 'reason' they upgraded.

(If I recall correctly, Myst was one of the first games that 'forced' adoption of new hardware for many people - it was the first big event game that came on CD, so people had to get those newfangled CD drives to play it. :D)
When my previous PC started to freeze up playing Snowrunner (I fuigured a failing PSU) I had a new PC built that was able to run Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition, so It needed ray tracing.
For Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy.
i am going to upgrade for final fantasy 15. i just have to figure out what to go for.

Half-Life 2, after that I always kept my system current/highend enough where I've not needed to upgrade for any specific game.

Ultima 7 (1992) and Doom (1993) probably were the major reason why I finally bought a nice 486 with a SoundBlaster.

Not a SX, a full on DX2 for you?

I upgraded for Ultima IX back in the day. Can't remember what card.

Upgraded for:

FL Studio -- CPU from some Core 2 Duo to i5-4460 to eliminate lag. It worked, but I still always wonder how in the heck anyone, let alone so many people, could have even used USB MIDI back LONG before the chip I got. A mystery I'll never understand, because until the i5, MIDI instruments were unplayable with a half-second lag on every system I ever owned. Magic, I guess.

Grim Dawn -- CPU from i5-4460 to i7-4790K, to eliminate stuttering. It worked.

RDR2 and No Man's Sky -- GPU from GTX 960 to RTX 1660 TI to get 60 frames at max settings at 1080p. It almost worked for RDR2. Worked for NMS.

Every game -- GPU and CPU to 3060 TI and Ryzen 7 7700X, and 32 GB DDR5 from 32GB DDR3 to get max settings 60+ frames on 1440p 144 Hz. Worked for everything except GTA V, which still runs at 15-30 frames when at max settings because FML, and GTA IV which apparently only runs at good framerates on somebody else's hardware because FML and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
