Wait for Windows “12” or just go with Windows 11
Since Windows 11 has been available for a couple of years now and there are rumors of Windows 12 coming in 2024, I'm wondering if it's a good time to upgrade to Windows 11 for gaming. What are your experiences with Windows 11 for gaming, and do you think I should make the upgrade or wait for Windows 12 next year? I’m still currently on Windows 10 haven’t bothered with PC settings to let it upgrade to Windows 11.

If you aren't using hardware that would benefit from moving to Windows 11, and if you don't care about the UI or other features then it will largely be very similar to your current experience on Windows 10.

If you did decide to upgrade, however, Windows 11 works perfectly fine for gaming. One of its headline gaming features (DirectStorage) still hasn't been meaningfully implemented in games yet. That will likely change over this coming year though as most new games now are dropping last-gen console support and will likely start implementing more tech like DirectStorage/RTX-IO.

What are your hardware specs?
You can run CPUz validator and post the validation link

As far as i know Microsoft will wait with Windows 12 until everybody has migrated to 11. So i would not hold my breath for 12.

11 is the first step of the 12 ecosystem so might as well get this party started early.

E-Cores?
Windows 11

Anything else?
Windows 10 (end of support October 25) and Windows 11

Simple as that.

What feature do you really need from win11? Imo, win10 is much more stable than win11. I upgraded my pc to win11 only because i was building a completely new pc

You be forced to upgrade to W11 in two years. So go for it now and learn the new interface. And no you do not need a Microsoft account as some people say.

Support ends Oct. 14, 2025. He just worded it poorly.

No, you most likely won't be forced to immediately upgrade to Windows 11 once 10 loses support, Windows 7 was unsupported for years yet is only now losing support for a lot of programs that use Chromium, like Steam.

Unless you have a legitimate reason to go with Windows 11, which is basically just owning an Intel 12th or 13th gen CPU with e-cores, then just stick with 10, because 11 was built for those aforementioned CPUs and the overall changes to 11 make it worse than usual for a Windows OS. It's just another Vista and 8 situation, they made crap decisions, and even Linux is literally more stable and functional.

Direct storage works on windows 10.

Requirements:
- 1909 or higher
- dx12 and 6.0 shader capable GPU
- nvme drive supporting pcie 3.0 standard.

Windows 10 does have access to DirectStorage indeed but it won't be as good as 11 will likely do in future titles due to the lack of "BypassIO" function in the kernel

So far, I'm using 11 for about 2 years at this point and the OS at this point is in a good state and if you are building a new PC then I would go with the newer OS anyway as 11 went through a lot of updates which did correct many of its flaws.

If you are currently running 10? the OS will keep on being supported for 2 another years and so far. there isn't much of a killer feature to go ahead and upgrade unless you are interested in longer support and new features.
