Norton is high rated for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7. If you want to switch to something lighter or free then Panda Free Antivirus might be an option.

I wouldn't be too concerned with your choice of AV. You don't need to pay for a subscription as there are many free AV options that are decent.

Take care when torrenting, don't download shady programs or visit shady websites, don't just click next next next when installing things because they bundle malware or adware sometimes.

If you follow those practices and use Firefox with noscript or policeman or something like it then you shouldn't get malware or viruses and shouldn't worry about it.

Google chrome is better than Mozilla firefox.

I don't recommend you run any real time antivirus software. At the end of the day the best defence against viruses/malware is yourself. I personally scan regularly with malware bytes anti malware and I've never had any issues.

In my opinion, can't go wrong with free Avast and Malwarebytes. If you are looking to spend money on premium features on any of the Antiviral programs... be sure to price check at NewEgg, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Fry's and at times Overstock.

Give any of these anti virus a chance:

- TrendMicro (which I am currently using)
- Avast (previously used)
- Bitdefender
- Panda
- AVG
- Microsoft Security Essentials... suprisingly, it does a decent job.

Premium versions are available.

For more info, follow this link: http://www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/ , and checkout the August - November 2014 test results. Unfortunately, viewing their charts in the PDF would be an eye strain, so you will need to atleast zoom in to about 150%.

FREE Software is crap period. Thats why its free, NORTON 360 is at the top of the List, anyone working with PC knows this. Unless of course you have Corp cash and encrypt the whole hard drive, but thats around 3K per machine.

PS: He who runs BAREBACK on the NET is a fool, and will eventually will get boned.

Norton is good. The one i have also covers 3 pc's in the house. Ofc it's not much use to me because i'm pretty carefull, but it does help my father and little sister who keep getting adware and $hit.

Norton 360 has improved, pretty good performance and detection ratio.

I personally perfer Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 due to the application control and firewall.

Whatever you do - don't go Microsoft Security Essentials, it's good performance, but does nothing for your protection, except for very common viruses, which you get free as a forced Windows Updates under the other name "Windows Defender". Both failed real virus detection since 2009. It's rating is a mere 0.5/5 protection.

As mentioned by Ghost, this is an extremely good test result / comparison done monthly:
