3 days to download 14 GB
Christmas mid day I got two games: Assetto Corsa (6.2 GB) and GRID Autosport (7.8 GB). I immediately started to download and install the games so that they would be ready the next day. I've been watching the games downloading and the lowest I've seen them go is about 26 BYTES/S. That's painfully slow. The peak says 553.7 KB/S. It is 3 o'clock on the third day and the games are nearly done. I believe since it's around Christmas that the internet would be slower, and my computer is older (Motherboard and processor are from 2010), but is there any way to speed this up? Over the last six months the internet speeds have been very slow on this pc. I'm one level above the router in my house, and i believe there is a wall downstairs blocking it, but is that enough to make the dl speeds go under 1% of what we're paying for? Or is it just that the computer is old and cannot use the connection it is given efficiently enough?

I can specify if need be and sorry if it's too vague or not specific enough.

what speed are you paying for?

You should go to speedtest.net and check your speeds.

also go to steam settings and check under the download tab. Check if it is limiting your speed and check what server you are downloading from.

Also, are you using a cable ? Because wireless sucks. if you are not using a cable, thats the first thing you should get.

Takes me exactly 1hour to download exactly 14gigs. Unplug router, everyone should now that by now

I've been told about 16GB is what my parents are paying. Speedtest has been trying for about an hour now. Changed the setting so that it was the correct download region, but it didnt help even after i restarted steam.

Not using a cable, using wireless. I don't think ethernet cable running around rooms, up stairs and all the way to my room would be very appealing, and I've already got enough wires.

I've done that twice today already. I've also reset the router, modem and computer.

First of all, if speedtest fails, then you got a problem. It should always pass no matter how slow your internet is, as long as it's working. Could try selecting a different server manually near your area to see if it helps.

The 16gb you are paying for is probably the monthly data limit. After it's used, the internet speed drops to super slow, barely usable speed. If thats really the case, you should consider getting an unlimited broadband package. They are cheap and most importantly, allow unlimited downloads.

Also, if you don''t want more cables, you could get one of these wireless range extenders.
Something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-EX2700-300Mbps-Wi-Fi-Extender/dp/B00NIUHAG6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419807162&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+range+extender

They plug into a power socket somewhere inbetween your modem and pc, that way making the signal stronger.

i think the game download servers are at their peak capacity or the house bandwidth are shared by whatever computers, tablets, smart tvs connected to the wireless router.

the info lacking in this thread is the actual internet plan.
1mbps (megabit) translates to about 128KBps (kilobytes per second)
5mbps is about 640KBps.
just divide the internet plan in kbps by 8 to get actual download speed in KBps.
1mbps = 1024kbps = 128KBps

16GB could be download data limit per day and should reset to zero at the end of time limit set by ISP.
if 16GB is the monthly data cap set by ISP, then OP is screwed since morelikely, there are other wireless devices connected to the router which also consume internet bandwidth.

as for the speedtest taking an hour long and not yet finished, maybe the start button of the test was not clicked?
speedtest website has many adverts in my country. check if you have clicked the correct button for speedtest to begin.

Get creative; u dont run cable up/down the stairs like that; you run it through the wall and drop it down and have it come through the wall on the 1st floor where the router is. Overall that wouldn't be a very long cable run and u should really consider running Ethernet for systems that are going to download alot or are going to be used for online gaming.

Thanks, i'll look into it.

Does U-verse even sell something that limited? I guess they would but either way everyone in the house knows that we would use far more than that per month so we do have an unlimited broadband plan. I'm starting to think that the computer is at fault. Finally, yes I did hit the start button, but it starts and the needle barely moves and the center says 4.17, but then it slows down and eventually stops on the little download animation between the person and pyramid.

Creative, yea, but I'm not a carpenter and I'm sure it would take tons of time, look bad, make a mess, be a hassle, and no one would even give me permission to do that.

Try testing other devices in your house, computers, tablets, smartphones. Run the speedtest on them. Maybe try using one of them from the same room where your pc is to see if the router reaches there. If other devices work fine, and it's only your pc that is not working properly, it could be a poor/faulty wireless adapter. So getting a new one could maybe fix it.

They are super cheap, but the more expensive the better thay are i guess. They also come in a few different forms. Either usb or as pcie expansion card that plugs directly into your motherboard.

Man o man and I thought I had the slowest internet on Steam lol! I use to have Virgin mobile wireless 4 g network that I would pay $30 dollars a month for this service ( 1 gb ) dataplan lol but anway.......To download the average game took me around 24 hrs on the average ( wireless stick)............My speed was something like 50kb/s very slow

Now iam on Comcast brodband ( wired lol ) and getting 7mb/s the same game takes me 15 Minutes to download. The saying is true you get what you pay for my bill is $120 a month cable/Internet.

Dude all you gotta do is tap the Ethernt line-Get a splitter if you need to, get a drill make 1 hole through the wall very easy you can even look it up on Youtube for gods sake, Not trying to be mean I just wanna help as iam sure most people on here do as well. Wired is always going to be faster then wireless. Just look-up some videos on how to do it-super easy I can assure you have nothing to worry about.
