Should i upgrade my processor?
So I have a 2.3ghz AMD Phenom x4 9600 black edition processor, it works pretty well but do you all think I shouold upgrade it to keep up with the newer games? I have 8gb RAM and a gtx 770.
I know I would have to upgrade my psu but that wouldn't be a problem.

It would be helpful if you can name one of game that give you a reason to upgrade CPU.

FX/i3/i5 you'd need a new motherboard and ram.

Depending on what am2/am2+ motherboard you have would dictate what your cpu upgrade path would be in the used market. What's the model make of motherboard?

Also, we're going need name of your motherboard with number. There are model that does not support all CPU.

I was thinking of getting the Phenom IIX4 965 3.4 GHz, it's compatible with my motherboard, is that a decent processor? the reviews are kind of undirect toward the product

46 and 2 is right. Save your money for brand new CPU + MB.

Upgrading to a 5-year-old CPU, that is upgrading for the sake of upgrading in other words, is rather pointless.

alright i think ill do that
Ikki6mt 22/dez./2014 às 2:08
that cpu will probably bottleneck the 770, upgrade to something a bit beter.

Alright I just finished ordering everything after a very long time researching it, I am gettinging a sabertooth 990fx r2.0 gen 3 motherboard, an AMD fx 9590 black edition, a 750w psu, and 8gb DDR3.
Rove 22/dez./2014 às 7:38
I think you'd need new motherboard & RAM to upgrade your CPU. RAM because your motherboard probably only supports DDR2 and it won't work in a new motherboard that will need DDR3 or DDR4 instead. Motherboard because for a upgraded CPU you will need a new socket as no current CPU will fit that socket.

Current AMD FX CPUs require AM3+. If you would share your potential budget I can make recommendation. Also do you need to upgrade?

Like have you checked your CPU usage and found that you are using more of your CPU than anything else and that the CPU is slowing you down?

Also have you considered overclocking? I mean it's a old CPU but also fairly good and overclockable. So a good quality high performance CPU cooler and overclocking (if your motherboard is up to it) is cheaper than upgrading.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo, sabertooths are over priced elitist boards and 9590 is just a higher binned overclocked 8350.

You should've gone to intel i5 camp or settled for a $80ish used x4 965BE even the crappy propus core is ahead of the 1st run Phenom 1.

Ps, I've got both the x4 965BE 3.6ghz and 8350 4.4ghz not a huge difference between them.

x4 980 PII 3.7ghz to FX8350 4ghz 2 fps diff ^.

/facepalm go intel. That board, socket, and cpu have been out for what 4 or 5 years? At least with a z97 you will still have the option to upgrade the cpu again. With the combo you got, you will NEVER be able to upgrade.

AM3 is dead. haters gonna hate, but its a fact.

Probably should've worded that differently, I bookmarked them and was going to start saving up for them, I have been hearing better reviews for the amd fx9590 than intel, and i've always prefered amd because of their overclocking ability, this seems like a very good setup for the price

damn son. i had an x4 940 3ghz and a 770 until last week where i upgraded to an i5 4690k. the phenoms are great but if you plant to play more demanding games id recommend an upgrade to a i5 or an 8350/70
