So a few of my questions are- (I've never built a pc or anytihng so bare with me :l)
What in this current setup should i keep (if any)?
What cna i do wiht the parts i shouldnt keep (if any)?
What should the upgrades be?

You need a better graphics card more than anything else. I suggest upgrading more than that if you don't mind. Get an 8GB memory kit or a better case would be a good idea as HP cases are small, cheap and a heat trap and any large graphics card might not fit.

A new PC like this would run any game maxed out.

You can save money by reusing whatever you can like the HDD, optical drive, PSU and even RAM as 6GB isn't totally horrible, but some newer games recommend 8GB now. You can save even more it just depends on the parts and what is reused. You could sell old parts on eBay or Amazon to help pay for new parts. I do recommend getting the i5-4690K if you can. It's very good for gaming and just about anything else.

ok that all sounds good.

what about the fan i have? and is the second link just the parts that i need? because i dont care about that extra stuff like cd drives and hard drive and stuff.

what do you think if i added the 8gb ram, changed the cpu to the 4690k, and added the cpu cooler from the first first link. Would all that stuff work together and would there be anything else i needed to add, whether it be from my old pc or bought online?

p.s- i thought you would say my cpu needs upgrade first since its old and has only 2 cores

If you get the i5-4690K or i5-4460 then you also need a new LGA 1150 H97 or Z97 motherboard. They change sockets and chipsets pretty frequently. The Hyper 212 Evo cooler would work for your current CPU/mobo socket, but would be too big for the HP case. It's a large cooler. Your side panel door probably wouldn't close with a cooler like that without a new case. A new CPU comes with a cheap stock cooler if you don't want to buy a better third party cooler. A better cooler is quieter and can handle some overclocking or at least keep the CPU cooler if not overclocking. The second link is a bare minimum recommendation if you want to save a ton and still get a great upgrade. You could just get those and reuse everything else and still play games maxed out. The CPU, graphics card and RAM matter the most. If you keep your current CPU/motherboard and just add a new 8GB memory kit then download and check the CPU-Z memory tab to see the specs of your current RAM and buy an 8GB kit of the same voltage, MHZ/frequency and timings (CAS) to make sure it's compatible with your current motherboard. Cheap low end boards only take up to 1600 MHZ RAM while a higher end board can take up to 3200 MHZ. It's best to get 1.5V RAM for Intel systems. The new memory kit I suggested would work fine with the Z97 board in the first link. If you click on the motherboard on pcpartpicker then it will show you the specs of the board and what RAM speeds they can take. Your current RAM should work fine in either motherboard from both links if you want to keep using it. Hopefully it's 1.5V though or the memory controller on the CPU could get damaged and cause BSOD and system instability.

ok well let me ask you this-

well for one, is it hard to overclock a cpu? if not then the 4690k would be better than the other locked cpu
and for two, could you give any estimate on how much i could get for this pc as a whole or for all the parts separate, because $1200 on an upgrade would be a lot, but i might be able to work it out if its $1000 or under

Does this include OS, mouse, keyboard and monitor?

and yes it does

That will be a problem then.

If the $1,000 includes all of that, you're better off just upgrading the existing machine and not having to shell out more for a new OS, mouse, keyboard and monitor.

$1,000 will get you quite a bit upgrades on this:

New processor, new RAM, new video card new PSU $744.84 that will fit:

You have an OEM as it came from HP.

Anyways, if $1,000 is purely for parts, can do this:

And thats all i need for a completely new pc?

if thats all then ill definitely be able to do it after i sell this if you think it can get at least $500

I've never overclocked. I just buy fast hardware that doesn't need it. The i5-4690K is pretty fast without overclock, but the CPU would last an extra year or two with a good overclock. It seems pretty simple to overclock these days with an unlocked K CPU and overclocking Z97 mobo. You raise the multi and test for temps and stability. Raise the voltage a little if needed. They even have automatic overclocking now. That tends to boost the voltage unnecessarily high from what I read. It's best to manually overclock. I think overclocking is too risky. Some people have really messed up their systems trying it. You best learn all you can before trying or just do an auto OC or not OC at all. I'm not the best to talk to about overclocking. I don't sell old parts either. From looking at eBay your CPU could sell for about $50 and the 7850 for about $80. The whole thing might sell for $400. Again, I'm not the best to talk to about this. Sorry it took a while to reply. It was a bit of a loaded question for me as I don't do either.

i will most likely not be doing overclocking thank you.

i will probably do the $1000 build by REcycled Awesome unless theres anything better i find.

and ill pay for it with saving up money and selling ♥♥♥♥ im not using lol
