[Solved] CPU voltage acting funny
When my computer is idling it hold 1.500-1.488V. I ran Prime95 because some people have pointed out that the volts hold steady when running it. However, when I ran it, the volts jumped between 1.455-1.676V every second.

I find this very odd from it.

CPU: AMD phenom II X4
motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-UD3P

To be fair I had it in a case for 6 years where it was contatly overheating, before I switched cases. The motherboard is brand new. Is the processor going to blow or something? If so, any good suggestions for gaming processors?

Check up with your motherboard to see what is compatible for cpu wise, and then also check out pricing.

is it overclocked?

what are you using to monior cpu voltage?
using multiple hardware monitor programs at the same time will cause erratic results

check the bios settings for voltage
generally on a pii, over 1.50v requires liquid cooling

normal working voltage on a pii at stock speeds should be around 0.9-1.4v

tbo, its time to upgrade the cpu
gong to an i3 would be a step forward for most games
or an i5 would be a giant leap

Its not overclocked. It holds 1.5V while idling, and using 1.464V underload. Also, it does not idle out.

I don't plan on switiching to intel because I just spent money on a new motherboard. It can support also the FX series processors. Don't know how great of a leap that would be.

The motherboard can support almost and FX series processor. Not the 9XXX. Any good suggestions for a new processor that would be an upgrde?

that board is ok for a fx cpu, but upgrading will give 4 more cores, and not much more speed

check the bios settigns for core voltage
set it to auto or 1.2v
or reset bios to defaults

if you are looking to upgrade, skip amd and go intel
fx cpus are over 2 years old with no improvements

if you have around $200 for a cpu/mobo upgrade, i5 4460 /w b85 board
for around $300, i5 4690k /w z97 board

if near a microcenter, you can get a 4690k /w z97 board for around $240+tax

Which PII is it, I don't pump more than 1.42xx v when it's overclocked x4 965BE and 1.40v max for stock speeds. Anything over 1.45v causes too much heat that's probably why yours was over heating if you're using the stock pos cooler, 1.67v you might as well take a blow torch to it toooo much volts.

I recently grabbed a FX8350 BF specials 1.35v 4.4ghz 40c-41c gaming and 42-43c p95 both cpus I use the tuniq tower 120 but the cm212 evo would be a slight bit better cooler. There wasn't a super noticeable diff between the two 8350 4.4ghz / 965 3.7ghz with the same r9 280x.

Ps, manually set cpu voltage in bios don't leave it in auto.

Heating is not an issue. I can get it above 50C. In the bios it hangs around 36-38C.
Its the phenom II X4 965 BE (not OC). The voltage in the Bios is set to 1.488V. I don't know why it is jumping like this.

set the voltage in bios to 1.2v if its not overclocked

I figured it out. AMD cataylst suite was not letting it idle out. I can now get it to idle out. Thanks.
