Computer acting up after power outage.

I turn off my PC every morning before I go to school. Power outage happened at school I did not have a surge protector, my fault there.. I got home and noticed my pc was on, and it gave the "Windows did not shut down properly" so I started windows normally, and I could barely access the internet because the I would open one tab on chrome and it would keep freezing. I ran Norton and it crashed twice before letting me run a scan just to be sure. After a few hours, it got better, and now I can keep 5 tabs open and no issues except for the occasional freeze up when. At the time it also could run my games (I tried Dishonored) and it runs just fine except loading screens took like 10 seconds compared to the usual 2. And right out of the loading screen it would lag a for a few seconds before running smooth. Now it seems to be running just fine with a barely noticeable "out of loading screen" lag. Now reloads saves at usual speed.

Was this just a hiccup? I only still have the issue of when I load, open, or close something or a tab, it will freeze for 2-5 seconds before resuming. It's tolerable, but I'd rather it be back to normal, as I've sunk $1400 into this puppy.


Any ideas what it was and how to fix it? I'm worried it's something with my CPU. And don't worry, I got a surge protector on there now, and investing in a uninterrupted power supply.

what powre supply do you have?
brand/model

good ones will stop surges from killing hardware
poor ones will kill mobo, drives, gpu or anything plugged into the pc

those issues sould like it could be the hdd
run windoes disk check
start -> computer -> computer -> right click on the drive -> properties -> tools tab -> error checking -> check now
tick both boxes, check now

And when I hit computer it is taking absolutely forever to access it. The green loading bar slugs along, so I'm gonna assume it's my hard drive? Could my drive have been writing something at the time the power outage happened even though my PC was off?

use hdtune trial to check the smart table

hdtune -> health tab
select the drive, and look at the data column for current pending sectors, and reallocated sectors
if they are more than 0 the drive is going bad

I downloaded it and I can't even open it. I try to even run as administrator and it'll just freeze over and my file folder will crash.

I'm putting "cmd chkdsk" in the "search programs and files" and nothing. Sorry new to file searching.

I got to command prompt but I can't chkdsk C: until I can run it as an administrator. And whenever I right click to do so, it just freezes up and crashes again.

that sounds more and more like a drive problem

back up whatever you can to a usb stick or network drive

then take the drive out and use another pc to run the disk check on it

Okay. my HDD is a Seagate so no wonder. But okay. I'll get my valuables onto my external hard drive and try tomorrow.

when prompted to reboot, reboot computer and don't press anything so checkdisk will do its thing.
