Getting new gaming laptop, help deciding/comparing models?
I'm currently stuck between these three models:

HP OMEN 16.1" Gaming Laptop 16-wf0163TX - https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/omen-gaming-laptop-16-wf0163tx-9p9a2pa.html

HP OMEN 16" TRANSCEND LAPTOP 16-U0071TX - https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/omen-transcend-laptop-16-u0071tx-8y307pa.html

Legion Pro 7i (16", Gen 8) - https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-pro-series/legion-pro-7i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/82wrcto1wwau2

Edit: prices are in AUD.

I have an HP gaming laptop. A victus one thought.

I don't know about the OMEN lineup but I would avoid HP.

3 months in and my wifi went bad. 5 months in and a windows update bricked the bios. (During a clean install.)

Just avoid HP.

they are all bad and spending 3 grand on any of them is wasted. here is why:
- ips screen with 3ms response time ( which could be even worse than what they claim )
- mini led with 7ms response time ( ghosting is abysmal on mini led )
- rtx 4070 ( 8gb of vram in 2024 is terrible )

for that money I would expect 240hz / 1600p oled or 120hz / 1800p with at least a 4080.

this gen gaming laptops are abysmal

Also understand this is Australia (AUD) so your average Gaming capable Laptop with any decent specs is going to be $2-4K easy. Not like USA/CAN where you can get them for cheap. Minimum wages in AU are much higher, so it's relative.

I would suggest look at a place within AU that stocks Laptops from brands like ASUS and MSI. Avoid HP, DELL (Alienware), Lenovo. Such as www.pccasegear.com

Thanks for the advice, I ended up going for the Lenovo though. It had the best specs I could find within my price range.

Can easily get a much more rock solid built laptop without tons of bloatware junk from brands like ASUS or MSI with decent specs and pricing. HP, Dell or Lenovo would be some of the worst choices out there next to what China offers for OEM laptops. You could also look into a brand called SagerNotebooks

But, that does not fix my laptop.

They are all bad and a waste of money.

You can get a steam deck oled + a custom built gaming pc with that kind of budget.

Legion Pro 7i

next week i gonna buy the Pro 7i Gen 9, support told me secretly, on last february week they gonna do some more special sales.. lets see..

The Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 will be a sexy upgrade to my current DELL G3 i5-8300H laptop!

Also the Pro 7i dont own all of that RGB light circus junk ... no one needs that crap ..

The Legion Laptops do have the NumPad. I cant use a Laptop without .. nearly all other gaming laptops with 4080 and 4090 GPU and a good 100% DCI-P3 screen dont own a NumPad, and dont include a keyboard which sets off light automatically.. these crappy laptops do either have their backlight permanently on or off, which sux..

In 2023 I have tested a lot of various gaming laptops and brands. ALL OF THEM were trash and poorly manufactured. Coil Whine, GPU issues, Mini-LED crap, no NumPads, no keyboard light auto-off, very very uncomfortable and not user-friendly at all...

The MSI had a NumPad on its touchpad, which was bugging a lot .. highly NOT recommended!

P.s.:
I would stay far far away from OLED screens.. OLED tech is a waste product you can trash after 2+ years of using ... two terms: "burn-in" & "wear-off" ..

About the same with Mini-LED screens. This tech is yet unpolished and un-evolved.. you see distracting bluring effects, artifacts around cursors and other stuff. for my taste a heavy downgrade compared to todays high-end and fully developed and sharpened IPS screens.

IPS screens and their fully sharpened resolutions which can easily run at 240 Hz with 100% AdobeRGB/DCI-P3 ..

And who needs HDR? Its graphics and colors suck, too ..

Well, you can use "Q"LED or Mini-LED for your TV even with HDR enabled, but that is an other story ..

This year is a great year to upgrade hardware. i9-13xxx or i9-14xxx.

The next generations are less powerful but more power-efficient with less cores. The next generation so is a next step in development built from scratch for desktop models, while the generation after that is for laptops/mobile devices. So maybe in 3~4 years we see powerful cores again for desktops AND laptops .. 15th gen and 16th gen you want to step away, yet .. Intel's new ULTRA branch. You wanna wait for powerful and "field-tested" 17th and 18th Gen which are then sold under a new and re-branded name ..
