my steam account has 500mg storage but I need more, can I upgrade this through steam or is external storage the only option?

External / internal HDD and use it as a new library by moving games to new library on external /internal HDD and adding it to the Steam storage manager as a new library,
Steam top left >settings>storage manager.

If they are referring to Steam Cloud, then there are limitations that you can run into; however, this is not something you can "add more storage" for. The amount of Steam Cloud storage is allocated per-game and per-save; and the total limitations depends upon what has been setup by the developer/publisher for the game.

File Size Limits

The absolute limits on file sizes for Steam Cloud may change over time. Here are some current limits and thresholds:

Size Restriction
100MB Maximum size for a call to ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWriteStreamWriteChunk
256MB May result in a non-optimal storage endpoint choice for the user's location, negatively impacting upload/download performance

Initial Setup
To set up Steam Cloud you must set the Byte quota per user and Number of files allowed per user options on the Steam Cloud Settings page in the Steamworks App Admin panel.

This quota is enforced on each Cloud-enabled game, on a per-user-per-game basis. It's recommended to set the values to reasonable amounts for your game title.

If the OP is talking about their Steam Library then Juanitta is spot on; add more disk space to your computer and add a steam library for that storage.

Also, I'm assuming OP you mean 500GB? The mention of 500mg (if you mean 500MB) is what makes me think this is talking about Steam Cloud saves.

Steam Cloud Save Storage has a MB limit on a per game basis. It's not 500MB for the whole account.

You might have such a limit for your account for things like Artwork. But I'm not sure what that limit is.

Where are you seeing this at?
