Sound Blaster G6
Am I to assume this hardware only does virtual surround, regardless of a 5.1 surround speaker system being used?

If you mean the Sound Blaster X G6 it will support Dolby Audio Decoding via the optical input/output.

Are you looking at this for something else or for your new PC? I thought you mentioned previously you were planning / did get a Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus?
Yes, the X G6 and I have the optical going to a Yamaha receiver.
Can't remember now why I jumped on the G6. But yes, for my new AMD build.

Just trying the G6 out on the win10 machine til I build the new one that is here.

Never really used optical connections before, so maybe that's why all sound is coming from the front 3 speakers and ignoring the rear 2 despite being set to 5.1?
thats a weird one

maybe
using its mini toslink out to spdif cable to a 5.1 receiver
could get you matrixed 5.1
way better than virtual surround

virtual surround, is just stereo with buzzwords attached

I'm using that cable to the Yamaha. The box says discrete 5.1 yet the software says virtual for everything.
All are updated including firmware.
Have not tried the headset with the splitter yet.
I am not impressed by this card by any means atm. May just return it or sell it and get something else.
Not sure if this is related, but I have the mic removed from the HyperX headset and the mic is still picked up somehow.
OP if you want a true surround sound card find the ASUS Xonar DTS 7.1 sound card. True 7.1 supporting Dataset, not virtual. Works flawlessly in 10 and Linux distributions. There are drivers for 10.
If your intention is to play discrete 5.1 content on your PC output to a 5.1 receiver then return the Sound Blaster X G6 and either get what you were originally thinking about from your other thread (Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus) or the ASUS Xonar DTS 7.1 as Sigma957 noted which is another good option.

Again, the G6 will do Dolby Digital decoding but only via the optical input/output. It does not support discrete 5.1 Dolby Digital over the USB connection from the host PC. So in order to do what you are wanting you'd need another audio device that supports discrete 5.1 optical output to then connect from that audio devices optical output to the G6 optical input, then another optical cable from the optical output on the G6 to the optical input of your receiver; which obviously is very likely redundant as you would be able to just go from your other audio devices optical output into your receiver.

The G6 would be a decent option if you were trying to use it for 5.1 output from a console like Xbox Series X|S or PS4/PS5. For what you are trying to accomplish though it is not going to work how you are intending it to.

Also, just as another point of info for the Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus; you will also need to setup a Dolby account and purchase a license for Dobly Digital Live if you want to use the decoder on the PC. You can also just output the encoded signal over SPDIF to your receiver if your receiver supports decoding Dolby Digital Live. Or, both the Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus and ASUS Xonar DTS 7.1 support DTS Connect (which includes DTS Neo:PC and DTS Interactive; the latter should give you positional audio for most games which support "5.1" speaker output).

EDIT: IIRC they give you a 14 day trial license for Dolby Digital Live when you first try to set it up in SoundBlaster Command. Also, I believe the same licensing requirement is true for the Xonar as well. I think they have a separate Dolby Digital utility application which you use to purchase / re-apply a Dolby Digital Live license for the decoder.

My intention with the G6 is for it to do exactly as it states it does. It says discrete 5.1 surround.
It's laid out on the front of the box.
But now, in the Sound Blaster Command center, there is no option. Reminds me of back when Creative stopped their cards from working as they should and wouldn't release drivers that would. It took a 3rd party programmer to code drivers/software that enabled their cards to work as they should from the get go.
Right now, it looks as if it's false advertising as there's no mention in the command center for discrete anything when its the on the front cover that it is an option.
There's no setting within the center for dolby and the only time it's mentioned is when it talks about playing back dolby digital media under the encoder tab.

I bought the G6 for my new AMD build on win11. I was just seeing how it works in my win10 machine til I get the new one built.

I searched a few Canadian sites for that card and all came up empty. It's either the AE or SE versions.

So I am doing some testing with it and when I go to configure speakers in windows to test 5.1, again, all sound comes from the front speakers.
This is without any software for the G6 installed.

I need a soundcard that is good across the board as I watch tv/movies through my pc and game with it as well.
Would the Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus do that?
it needs the drivers
in windows audio control panel set its speaker count to 5.1

I had the drivers/software all installed. Even then, all sound was still out of the front speakers only, even when selecting a single rear speaker.
The software also has no option for discrete 5.1 as it claims to have on the front of the box.

Yes, as noted before. Both the Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus and the ASUS Xonar AE 7.1 will output discrete 5.1 channel audio via the S/PDIF optical output.

And again Dolby charges a license for their Dolby Digital Live. The Sound Blaster X AE-5 Plus supports both Dolby Digital Live as well as DTS Connect so any games or content that supports DTS connect you can use that.

As you noted it needs the drivers; and with SoundBlaster Command, that is the driver control and you have to configure it in that because it take precedence over Windows settings. If you have it set in SoundBlaster Command for the device to be "headphones" or "stereo", it doesn't matter what speaker output you select in Windows, it will only output 2 channels using virtual surround.
