what is its s.m.a.r.t. status?
i don't know what you mean by 'it hangs after installation of windows updates'.
most ms updates needs windows restart to complete update installation and this will take time.
you did not state if you are already on windows 7 sp1.
you did not state if this is a new installation.
you did not state if you have installed all chipset drivers.
you did not state if windows 7 installation is done on a GPT or MBR partition style.
you did not state any installed antivirus/antimalware/antispyware.
the i7-4790k is a very fast processor. sad to say my intel g630 with intel hd gpu boots faster than your setup.
Its a new installation
All chipset drivers are installed
Installation is on gpt
no antivirus etc installed (have not been online to get anything like that yet)
thanks for your fast response.
'enable fast boot' is a feature which allows for a more quick boot time for windows installed on GPT partitions.
fast boot is allready enabled. its one of the things i have checked. :(
"Make sure you're getting the SATA controller drivers from ASUS and not Microsoft".
I have only installed the drivers from the asus website.
it hangs and then continues
Consider investing in a SSD (Solid State Drive). Clone the OS (Operating System) onto that, or at least the boot manager. That should get your boot down to around the 5-10 seconds mark.
What are you running that Wd Blue HDD from? SATA?
Do NOT use the ASMedia SATA ports (without their drivers / controller)
Latest drivers list:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_FORMULA/HelpDesk_Download/
Check your motherboard BIOS version -
"MAXIMUS VII FORMULA BIOS 2012", if you have an older version, flash update it, because the latest versions improve system stability and performance.
Make sure you have the USB 3.0 Controller installed, before having any devices running off them.
Make sure you have the Motherboard Chipset, SATA Controller Driver, and any AHCI/RAID Drivers installed successfully.
Install the Realtek Audio, Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver, and Graphic Card Drivers (from the offical website such as Nvidia) lastly.
With all those install correctly, you should feel a major performance boost and nothing should be hanging it from using Microsoft Windows native drivers. (which just major to get it running)

Where are you getting those specs?
