Maximus vii formula 4790k slow boot
spec:

Maximus Vii formula
4790k (standard clock)
Wd Blue 500gb
8gb DDR3 1600mhz corsair vengence
corsair tx650 psw
Windows 7 x64

Just built this new rig and im having some trouble when it comes to boot times.
It will post fine but once the windows logo appears it hangs for atleast 20-30 seconds i would say.

I have tried re-formatting to discover it boots up fine once windows has finished being installed but once ive done any windows updates it then starts to hang... A pc of this spec should boot faster then my amd fx6100..... right?

I have heard that maximus formula boards do boot slow, is this true?

I know i am not using an sdd but that should still not affect the boot time this much i would not think.

I would say its not the hardrive as it boots fine once windows has finished installing, its just after its fully updated when it starts to hang. (even if no drivers or software have been installed)

Anyone else had this problem? or anything i can change?

cheers.

booting speed is up to the drive your using, not the cpu, basic computing 101.

I know that.... thats not what im asking... im asking why it hangs after ive installed windows updates.. its motherboard related or software related. as i was using the hdd on my previous system with no problem.

how old was the wd blue hdd?
what is its s.m.a.r.t. status?

i don't know what you mean by 'it hangs after installation of windows updates'.
most ms updates needs windows restart to complete update installation and this will take time.

you did not state if you are already on windows 7 sp1.
you did not state if this is a new installation.
you did not state if you have installed all chipset drivers.
you did not state if windows 7 installation is done on a GPT or MBR partition style.
you did not state any installed antivirus/antimalware/antispyware.

the i7-4790k is a very fast processor. sad to say my intel g630 with intel hd gpu boots faster than your setup.

Windows is fully updated sp1
Its a new installation
All chipset drivers are installed
Installation is on gpt
no antivirus etc installed (have not been online to get anything like that yet)

thanks for your fast response.

go into bios, find setting 'enable fast boot'.

'enable fast boot' is a feature which allows for a more quick boot time for windows installed on GPT partitions.

Make sure you're getting the SATA controller drivers from ASUS and not Microsoft.

Hang and continues or solid hang and stuck forever?

"'enable fast boot' is a feature which allows for a more quick boot time for windows installed on GPT partitions".

fast boot is allready enabled. its one of the things i have checked. :(

"Make sure you're getting the SATA controller drivers from ASUS and not Microsoft".

I have only installed the drivers from the asus website.

it hangs and then continues

For a computer that spec - you should have a better hard drive and hopefully a good graphics card?

Consider investing in a SSD (Solid State Drive). Clone the OS (Operating System) onto that, or at least the boot manager. That should get your boot down to around the 5-10 seconds mark.

What are you running that Wd Blue HDD from? SATA?
Do NOT use the ASMedia SATA ports (without their drivers / controller)

Latest drivers list:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_FORMULA/HelpDesk_Download/

Check your motherboard BIOS version -
"MAXIMUS VII FORMULA BIOS 2012", if you have an older version, flash update it, because the latest versions improve system stability and performance.

Make sure you have the USB 3.0 Controller installed, before having any devices running off them.

Make sure you have the Motherboard Chipset, SATA Controller Driver, and any AHCI/RAID Drivers installed successfully.

Install the Realtek Audio, Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver, and Graphic Card Drivers (from the offical website such as Nvidia) lastly.

With all those install correctly, you should feel a major performance boost and nothing should be hanging it from using Microsoft Windows native drivers. (which just major to get it running)

7,200 RPM 64MB cache WD blues work great. SSD's are awesome as an OS drive but really not needed for top gaming performance. A single blue WD 1TB or larger is fine. I looked up the specs on your drive and it's only 5,200 with low cache.

Where are you getting those specs?
