Asus Maximus V Gene - fan headers?
Hey guys,

So after I bought a second GTX 670 my first GTX 670 is getting pretty hot (70-90 C) because there is just minimal space between them.

As a solution for this I am getting 4 extra Corsair AF120 Red LED Quiet Edition fans. I am going to place 2 of them at the top of the case and 2 of them at the side panel so the cool air will be blown directly onto my graphics cards and will also be blown out of the case by the top 2 fans.

The other 2 fans in the case are just the standard case ones. One in the front and one at the back.

My case, a Corsair Carbide 300R, does support the places for those extra fans so that's not the problem. The only thing I need to know before I am going to buy those fans is how the fan headers on my motherboard work.

I have an Asus Maximus V Gene m-atx motherboard. The connectors of the new fans are 3 pin.

So how much fan headers does my motherboard has and how much are still available?
The fans that are now connected:

-2 standard case fans
-1 Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B CPU cooler

Hope you guys can help me out,

Bart

Based on the motherboard manual, it looks like it has 5 fan headers.

So I have 2 CPU headers en 3 case? (I bought this pc second hand) 1 CPU header should then already be in use and 2 case fan headers also. So 1 case fan header can be used. Can I use the second CPU header for one of the fans too?

And if so I will end up needing 2 more fan headers.... How do I get those?

You can use fan header splitters or connect any extra fans to your power supply molex cables.
Okay great. I will try that. So the second CPU fan header can't be used for normal fans?

I've never done it, but it seems you can if you Google the subject. I don't see why you couldn't. The fan just needs a power source. There's nothing wrong with using the PSU molex connectors, especially if you have quiet fans. I have my case side panel 200mm GPU fan connected to the PSU with molex and it's not that audible over the rest of the system.

Plug the fans in wherever you want to.
